What Types of Car racing is there?
Discussion
Don't forget Formula Chavmobile (drivers of ridiculously tarted up shitters compete to put the average town in danger by driving pointless laps of the town centre / seafront at high speed whilst wearing a racing attire of amusingly baggy jeans and burberry caps).
MacDonalds Car Park Grand Prix (competed over a shorter course to Formula Chavmobile and one which includes more tyre smoking opportunities, mandatory pit stops for refreshments to the drivers can throw their rubbish out of the windows and usually including a 16 year old pace bike rider sat atop a 50cc chicken chaser wearing race rep leathers his mum insisted he bought).
Or rather more ontopic hill climbs, drag racing, banger racing.

vlc - where do you live........Mars?
You obviously haven't the energy to take down a copy of Autosport or MotorSport News for a quick peek when in WH Smiths.
It's all there - F1 (too much, in fact), F3, F3000, saloon cars (in all their varieties) classic racing, clubman racing, karting, rallying (in all ITS guises), hillclimbing . There are literally HUNDREDS of categories of motor sport to suit all levels of skill and budgets.
And that's just the UK scene - all these categories exist in other countries as well.

no seriously, those mags have too many ads in them.
as for F1 an F3000 etc, there all 'formula' whereas im asking about general catagories, not model specific races.
the earlier mentioned 'drag racing' is a good example of what i mean.
ps- the mentioned 'lawn mowers an go-karts' aren't car races !!!
F1 is not model specific - all the cars are built by different manufacturers/teams. F3000 is one make now but it wasn't originally.
Your original question is still confusing.
I would narrow the categories down to -
proper circuit racing:
open wheel
closed wheel
saloons
GT sports cars
sports prototypes
karting
against the clock racing: -
rallying
sprinting
hillclimbing
Drag Racing is an oddball category as it is a form of racing in that competitors race head to head but it is also against the clock.
Virtually every category of motorised vehicle is raced somewhere in the world - from lawn mowers (as already mentioned) to humble saloons (like Citroen 2CVs)right through to 3,000 bhp fragsters and everything in between.

who cares, as to the casual eye, F1 to F3000 kind'a looks the same at a glance, an thus the average joe perceives it as all the same - but show them a dragster race or a WRC clip - an theyre easily see the difference in no time, an thus know which type they find the more appealing.

thats ok, since i asked the same query on another car forum an got the answers i were looking for, here they are....
rallying
extreme rallying
dragster
amateur-trackday
formula GP
touring car
stock car
endurance racing
Nascar
IndyCar
so as you all can see, car racing is a highly varied mix
Tho i will add on your suggestions of...
GT sports cars
sprinting
hillclimbing
thanx for the additions
Vlc,
I think you should take Eric's words to heart. You obviously have an interest in all things wheeled, so go out there and read as much as you can. You can get tons of stuff from your local library without adverts in them. That's what I did as a schoolboy and I'm sure Eric did too.

Whoever answered your question in the other forum wasn't very up on their motorsport!
It's a very strange list, especially with trackdays in there, it's not even motorsport, its a fun thing for people who don't race to do.
I'd have said the following.
Single seater racing (F1, F3000, F3, FRenault, BMW etc right down to classic FFord and FVee!)
Sportscar/GT (LMP, GT1,2 and 3, Grand Am, Trans Am, Brit GT)
Saloon Car (Touring cars and one make championships
Rallying (From grass roots up to World Championship level and Rally cross)
Drag Racing (Says it all!)
Karting (From international level through to club and junior events)
That pretty much covers everything, you could put Autotests and hillclimbing in among another category but they use different forms of the other (single seaters or saloons etc) so that should cover just about everything.
What the hell do you mean by 'extreme rallying' too?Isn't that just a computer game???

Hmmm, The result of a drag race has nothing to do with who records the quicker time or faster speed. It is who crosses the finish line first. As the timers for each lane run completely independently of each other, and only start to time when the vehicle moves, NOT when the light changes to green, it is quite common for the race to be won with a slower time or speed than your opponent.
Not generally. Sometimes there is a low qualifyer bonus points, and setting a record may get you the odd bonus point. However, the main aim of the sport, and what wins you the event, is getting to the finish line first, before your opponent, not who runs the fastest time. A Heads up drag race eliminator could be run very well with times and speeds remaining unpublished.
Yeah - OK - but they do show the times in drag racing.
And F1 cars are most definitely not "one make" or "single manufacturer". At the moment there is a tendenacy for them to look very similar due to very tight regulations forcing designers down certain routes. It wasn't always like this (one only has to look at the various shapes of F1 cars in the 70s to see how disparate they can be) and hopefully in the future they may become more varied again.
Anyway, the point I originally made is that anyone genuinely interested in motor sport hardly needs to ask such a basic question. Are they just too lazy to get off their butts and toddle into their nearest magazine shop/library/book-store and find out?
As Can Am said, that's exactly what I did when I was a kid. I was a true motor racing fan even when the only way to know what was going on was to read up the reports in mags and watch the odd(very rare) race on TV.
