Go and buy the Jan05 edition of Octane. It's one of their best.

- Zonda Roadster vs Murcielago Roadster
- Lamborghini Espada
- Ferrari GTS: 275 vs 365
- Aston DB3S
- Feature on Silverstone
- Free 05 calendar with some saucy shots in it of the Enzo etc... not quite as good as Pistonheads but its free

I'm not on commission but Octane isn't that widely available but its worth a hunt around to pick up a copy

I have it. I found it in my local WHSmith.
I'm not totally sure which I prefer, the Zonda or the Murcielago...I'll have both!!

Murcie is great but you would have to take the Zonda just for the quality of the finish and the exclusivity, not to mention the performance.

Octane is a good mag

You've got to remember that the Zonda is also £150,000 more expensive though. The Murcielargo represents fantastic value for money compare to other supercars in a similar performance league - and contrary to popular belief, if you're spending £160,000 on a car another £150,000 does make a difference.

Hmmm...

If you're talking purist attributes of performance and capability then you can get something that would whoop a Murciélago for a third of the price (Ultima, anybody?).

Thing is we're dealing with exotic supercars, and this brings up all kinds of subjective feelings and unreasonable bias (nothing wrong with that!).

The Zonda is just much more exclusive and desirable than the Lambo - in a different league if you ask me. The Zonda is the first in the current crop of übercars (which includes the Enzo, Koenigsegg, CGT et al), and they are just on a different plane from the "commoner" supercar.

Performance is irrelevant once you hit this sort of plane IMHO. They're all unusably quick in the real world and if you fancy something for the track, you'd buy a Radical.

Of courss, but it is my personal opinion that the Lamborghini has the fantastic looks, power and presence to be a 'real' supercar, but the price tag is significantly lower than its peers. This, in one way, could be seen as its problem - would we consider it a competitor to the Carrera GT, Enzo etc if it was £250,000 rather than £150,000?

Just my tuppence,

William

True, but the Lambo doesn't have that quality reserved for the upper-echelon of automobiles - exclusivity.

As a value-for-money thing it's a fabulous proposition, but you don't need to spend a long time in any rich city to catch sight of one. They are fairly common cars, owing to their production volume and (as you rightly pointed out) price.

Of course price and exclusivity almost always go together - not just the need to recoup R&D costs in a limited production run, but also to cash in on the ability of the ultra-rich to spend virtually any sum when they want something bad enough.

If you want a Murci, you can get one and you don't have to pay over the odds to do so. If you want an Enzo or a Carrera GT, be prepared to mortgage your life for the premuim you need to pay over and above the list price for the pleasure of owning one. They simply aren't as common or freely available - therein lies a large part of the attraction. The Enzo is a one-off (for 350 people).

Anyway as ever it's relative. The Gallardo is pretending to be a Murci (in a way), the Murci is pretending to be a Zonda (in a way) and the Zonda is pretending to be a jet fighter (truth). And I think the Zonda comes closest to emulating what it's trying to emulate.

Well i've done 6500 miles in 3 months in my Murcie, its been from Cornwall to Scotland and in France all last week and in all that time I did'nt see one Gallardo let alone another Murcie. Got stuck outside Harrods in Knightsbridge on Sunday night in traffic and could'nt move cos it was surrounded then mobbed by people taking photos from every angle, not that I enjoyed it one bit, cos I did'nt.
I agree a Pagani is more exclusive and better built but its £170K more for goodness sake, how exclusive do you want a supercar to be?

HAve to say I've seen more Enzos on the road than I've seen Gallardos. Only seen 3 Murcies on the road (not including yours @ VMAX Simon)... And until recently I was living in a not so poor part of Surrey filled with Astons, Ferraris and Bentleys. So Lambos are by no means a common site. { Ok if you live on park lane like bloody rico then you're going to see a lot more than yer average UK dweller...}

Hehe... shades of grey Mr. Murci.

I wish I had a car exclusive as yours, let alone something even less "common".

Are you allowed to give us any details of the France trip Simon or do we have to wait until January for the next edition of EVO?

Nah. It was good fun.All met up in Dover at the Seacat terminal, 15 cars in all, quite a sight. There's a 550 Maranello just joined fast fleet from next month, ended up driving that and the tree frog green Exige for most of the time.Did'nt drive the Lambo much but everyone else did! Stayed at a Chateaux near Boulogne overnight (everyone totally smashed) but the talk never really left cars. They are all rabid petrolheads and all nice guys to boot. Lots of waiting around for photos and tracking shots etc but all great fun. Have to say I can see now why people enjoy those bloody evo things! Talk about whizz bang accelaration. Thought the BMW 645i was crap though, not at all how I expected, very very soft but the Exige was great fun.First time ive driven a 550 and I loved it. Drove non stop back from Dover to West Yorks in 4 hrs, gauge on minus empty in the orange monster, dont know what the mpg works out at.I'd better check first if its ok to put a couple of photos up but I somehow doubt it!

Sounds bloody fantastic. Has to be the perfect job. Going to fantastic locations and driving other peoples exotic cars.

I take it you have already written to Father Christmas asking if he can drop a new clutch and 4 tyres down your chimney
