£60-£70k; new Maserati 4200GT/GranSport or 5-7 year old 550?

Have owned a 3200GT and driven a 550 but as an owndership proposition for a second/third car and 5-7k miles pa which is better? Any thoughts?

since my brother drives an 4200 gt as his everyday car...I think that the old 3200 gt is much more fun (challengeing) than the new one...so I think, that the ferrari is much more fun - as long as you drive not 15.000 miles a year...

Andrew,

I'd have to suggest the 550 - it wasn't the EVO car of the decade for nothing!

To be honest having already had a 3200 like me, I don't think you'd find the standard 4200 that much of a move onwards.

The Gransport is a great proposition - I see this joining the ranks of various other hallowed Maseratis long term.

Overall though - it's got the be the v12 surely!

Surely you wouldn't expect any other answer?

It's a no-brainer - choose the Ferrari.

But how robust is a 5-7 year old car going to be. Are dampers, springs, clutches, gearboxes etc going to give up?

Also what do I do about a warranty after 7 years old as I think that the Power warranties run out then?

...or wait for the '06 Maserati coupe.

My previous post (from sometime in November) had an artist's impression of the '06 model year car. However, having just has a quick look the picture has now been replaced with a small red x - does this mean it's been archived/deleted?)

Can anyone find it again?

Really does look quite stunning.

Probably the best answer.

I even called up today for the likely wait for a new shape M5 - two to three years from launch! (and I don't even like the look of it!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Hmmm, I'm sure the M5 is a stunning machine, but I really can't get on with the looks either inside or out.

C'mon boys n' girls.....someone find that picture of the '06 Maser Coupe 'cos it really is

Indeed...£70k gets you a very good one. Trouble is I've been trying to live my life without ever owning a 911.

I think that I will wait for the sub £90k Gallardo's. 4WD is useful up here in Scotland and whilst this would be a third car I'd rather it was something I could use all year round.

The Gransport Maserati is gorgeous though.

And while buying one at new list may not be the soundest idea in terms of short term depreciation, a ex-demo or such for £10k off list ought to be possible in the new year.

With a full warranty and all the stuff associated with a new car, its a tempting idea.

Even the plain vanilla 4200 ( if there is such a thing ! ) is mighty tempting. You can pick one up with less than 5000 miles on it for £42-45k.

Don't buy a 2002 model though. Important improvements were made to the cambiocorsa transmission for the 03 models and beyond.

Mighty Tempting at around £55k which would know doubt buy it!

Justify it to yourself by the fact its not really a true 911!

Not the same illustration, but I came across this today.

www.italiaspeed.com/

Click on 'Future Models' in the box on the left hand side, then scroll down until you come to the blue Maserati 5000 GT. Click on 'more' to see details, then click on the photo to see an enlarged version.

Hmmm, interesting. I like the idea of a 5 litre V8

However, I'm not so keen on it becoming a two-door Q-Porte. Whilst the saloon is very striking, I don't think the look transers well to a coupe. The Autocar picture looked like a cross between the current coupe and a DB9.

Let's hope Pininfarina produces a beautiful design. Recent efforts haven't been as successful as their past.

I do. A second friend is currently rebuilding the engine and it's UTTER UTTER CRAP. Don't even think of touching one with a barge pole.
