Has anyone here fitted 700c tyres to a 29er?

I was researching this at the weekend and it would appear that 700c rims are actually the same diameter as 29ers, the only difference being that 29ers tend to have wider rims.

So I could, for example, fit a set of Conti Top Contact 700c 46c tyres to my Cobia.

Anyone here tried it?

I'd like to know as I love the Top Contacts on my 26er and want the same tyres on my 29er

The men on the internet were correct. 700c tyres fit a 29inch rim.

Can't wait to try them out on my commute.

This is where the ertro numbering for tyres/rims comes in handy, they are indeed the same diameter hence they are labelled 622.

Yes. ETRTO 622mm. It works. I did it the other way round - put my CX 700x35 tyres onto my hybrid 29er wheels.

The odd thing is that is not general knowledge in the bike shops where I have asked (admittedly all Evans or Cycle Surgery). IIRC I've asked in a total of 5 shops about the poor range of 29er tyres and they've all looked blank or spun some nonsense about lack of demand becuase "kids don't do stunts on 29ers so there's no market.....". Eh?

I went in to Evans near work on Monday to try to buy some 700c Conti's, told the fella what I was trying to do and I might as well have been practising some form of witchcraft the way he looked at me.

Also keen cyclists in the office also look baffled.

I run Easton Haven 29er disc wheels on my cyclocross bike which is technically 700c.

I'm surprised you say that. I'm basically a roadie, but of my mountain biking friends 3 of 4 are raving about 29ers.

Well they kind of make sense if you want to commute through a city on a MTB.

If commuting on a MTB actually makes sense.

29ers are far from dead, or dying. 650b is certainly not dying. 26" is already dead for new bikes though.

29ers - XC bikes
650b - A bit of everything, from XC, Enduro and even DH now.

You won't see many XC racers switching to 650b, simply because 29ers are faster.

Normal road bikes and CX: 700c.

I don't get all this 29er hype either. The ETRTO should be the first marking to look for on a tyre IMHO, because it if definitive.
Calling it 29er is just marketing hype suggesting some difference. It is just a larger tyre on a 622 rim.
This sort of hype is regrettable, and resulted in confusion when 700 first came to uk - I recall the uk marketing just called all the rims 700c, whereas on the Continent they had been 700a, 700b or 700c for years.
How would it be if instead of 185/55 R14 on car tyres we had 18er and on 195/55 R14 we had 19er. Crikey talk about complicating the simple. ETRTO is your bible.

A new twist on this ...... Has anyone ever fitted 29er tyres to a 27"??
Would seem to be a good idea (without having tried it?) But the extra clearance offered by an old frame that used to take 27" wheels would be ok using 700c (or 29er) wheels and tyres? As long as the brakes would reach (a low drop calliper should do it, or bolt-on V brake mounts) and all's good... Maybe? Can anyone answer the question?

What about 700x25 tyres on 29er rims. Would the tyres be too narrow? It seems the rims are mainly made for 2.1 to 2.5

Should be ok, there's only 2mm between the width of my road 700c rims and my 29er rims.

I think it would work on mine - there's a small sticker on the rim IIRC which suggests the inner rim width is 18mm
