24 Years After the Event I'm Proved Right
Discussion
In the dying moments of the 1990 WC semi I was screaming for Bobby Robson to get Shilton off and bring on Dave Beasant. Shilton was the far better keeper but Beasant was great at saving pens.
Everyone around me said I was a nutcase, and said you just can't do that. In the years since, whenever the subject has come up, mates have used it to laugh at me. I'm the loon who wanted to sub the goalies with 30 secs of as WC semi left. Ha ha, what an idiot.
Well the Dutch have done it tonight. The manager has decided that his best keeper isn't his best penalty stopper so has swapped them in the last min. Obviously with the prior agreement of them both, as they were hugging after the game.
It can be done and it has been done. All you need is a manager with guts and flair and who isn't bound by convention and just wants to give his team the best chance of winning. We've never had a manager like that and certainly don't have one currently.
Well done the Dutch.

What a strange thread!
There's never been anything stopping a manager doing what LVG did tonight. To claim somehow that you have defied some unwritten rules by coming out with some blindingly brilliant decision is a little weird.
Anyway, off to bed now. 24 years ago, my mother said I couldn't stay up past midnight but I have. So there!!

TWK...
Yes, there are better penalty stoppers and better goal keepers. Some here appear not to appreciate that BIG difference. Was it an illusion or was Krul massive in that goal? A BIG goal keeper could be less agile during the course of a game and have his hands that essential millimetre or two away from the ball which a more agile keeper would deflect or save.
In other circumstances, a good little 'n can be better than a good big 'n. ... and t'other way around as we all saw tonight. Krul was exceptional ... or, maybe he and his Coach were simply lucky ..
However your plan for 1990 has one HUGE flaw. That was England and this evening it was Holland. Spot the difference...

Of course there's nothing in the laws of the game stopping it. But people have told me it could never be done. That somehow the No 1 keeper would refuse to play the next game if they got thru, or no manager would ever risk it in case No 2 keeper was useless in the shootout or worse still, let in a very late goal before they got to the shootout. There's never been anything stopping a manager doing what LVG did tonight. So I've been told consistently that it's a bonkers idea that no professional manager would ever consider such a thing.
Looking forward to seeing my mates over the coming months, and 1 has already texted me to say "ok, you win."

So does this mean that every time a team has won on penalties & the manager/coach has not subed the keeper that the manager/coach is correct ?
I do agree though that Dave Beasant should of come on for Shilton when we got done by the Germans in 1990.

You've been proved right that a manager may make a substitution. Beyond that, it's pure conjecture. Didn't Beasant break his foot dropping a jar of salad cream on it in between his two England caps?
