How long do you get out of tyres?
Discussion
I noticed this morning whilst topping the air up that my rear tyre in particular is distinctly knackered! The tyres in question are Vittoria Rubino Pros which came with the bike. I've logged 2,276 miles on them since getting them, and was just wondering if this tallies with most people's expectations?
My usual commuter tyre beforehand was a 28C Conti Gatorskin, and the tread on those seemed near enough indestructible! The ones I have replaced were replaced because the sidewalls started to go before the tread.
I've got a pair of 23C Conti 4 Seasons to go on this evening, so it will be interesting to see how they compare...

Dont talk to me about bloody tyres!!
Noticed last week the 500 mile Vredestein Fortezza Tri Comps on one bike had a bulge in them , several nicks , bit gutted as they have been on under 2 months
So I thought I would take the Winter bike with bullet proof Conti 4Seasons on, cleaned it all down, oiled it all up , all ready to go, then I noticed that the rear tyre had a huge bald patch on that has gone through to the base layer and is propper f
ked! It is about 6 months old, but only ridden about 1000 miles
I stuck the vitoria cheapo tyres that came with the bike on it, no nicks or wear at all on them and they did 1000 + winter hard miles through all kinds of s
t without a mark at all!
I find that cheaper heavier tyres last better, in fact some can be like cockroaches

Had the standard ones my bianchi came with for 2.5 years/8k commuting miles (in and out of London)
They were all good until I had the bike serviced and new brake pads fitted, then somebody pulled out on me.....they then turned bald! Reckon the only reason they lasted was due to my brakes giving up the ghost and me not bothering to sort them for a good 9+ months...

I'm running these but in 25cQuite a few cuts and small holes but they're doing fine. After over 2,500 miles you can still just make out the seam down the middle of the one on the front.
As you say though, the threads on the sidewalls seem to be slowly coming adrift one by one.
Last set of rears lasted 8,000kms. Current set is on 7,000kms but look like they may get to beyond 8k before needing replacement.
The front is still on from when I bought the bike 15,000kms ago.
The biggest problem isn't actually wearing out but getting so thin that puncture protection reduces too much.

I've done about 6,000 miles of inner-city commuting over 2 years on a pair of cheapo Bontrager branded tyres that came fitted to my Trek 1.2 road-bike.
Cheap and no doubt, heavy, but plenty of tread left on them.
Both completely covered in deep nicks and gouges and the rear one has gone kind of 'square' but still has plenty of rubber left.
Once very 6 months or so, I carefully prise out chunks of glass etc with a bradawl as my idea of 'maintenance'.
2 punctures over the life of the above.
Would heistate about swapping them for something more expensive. Could Gatorskins match the cheap heavy approach?

From 3 gp 4 seasons:
first is still running fine. The second delaminated inside 1000k and a large section of tread fell off. The third failed at the bead (4 inch strip where the rubber has come away from the kevlar/whatever it is that forms the bead, so blowing off the rim and leaving me stranded)
Good when they work, but questionable quality control.

i managed over 11,000 miles on a set of schwalbe marathon plus's. in fact both front and rear WHEELS needed replacing before the tyres did, as i managed to wear the brake rim surface out first causing them to split.
and for the record, i never had one puncture in the front tyre, and only one in the back.
do i get a certificate?

The GP 4 seasons don't last long at all, my mate did his in under a thousand miles. I've got some cheap Conti Sport Contact on my winter and summer training bike and they have been great, long lasting, puncture resistant and grippy enough for me,
Oh well... I've had them sat in the cupboard for a while - they were on a deal which seemed too cheap to turn down - so I might as well use them!
