Let's have your road rash tips
Discussion
Having binned it again in a race at the weekend I am currently enjoying the recovery from the latest bout of road rash. I follow the wet healing/cover it up/loads of antiseptic stuff/change the dressing daily routine which is fine, but changing the dressing is time consuming and really smarts quite a lot. There must be a better way.
So let's have 'em. All your tips and tricks to aid recovery in the least unpleasant way possible.

Had my first off last week in a TT and cut up my thigh, have been using savlon healing cream, along with a self adhesive dressing during the day, then loads of antiseptic and free breathing skin overnight. Seems to be healing up quite quickly, although was only a 15-18 mph low slide in the wet, so nothing major. The carbon doesn't seem to want to heal up like me unfortunately! So let's have 'em. As said as little dressing as you can get away with, gentle covering.
The more air/drying up you can get the better without it getting infected.
As soon as it is scabbed let it to the air, forget about upsetting the pansies around you in normal life who think it is disgusting looking.
It will leak out white puss around the corners of the scab.
As an aside hope you are well Eddie other than the obvious. As I told you I knew when my last race was and that was that, other things in life have taken over (see the horse thread in all creatures great and small). What has been really sad for me this year I haven't been well enough to ride my bike at all due to a calcium/vitamin D problem which has caused problems with my muscles/nervous system. Very sad.
Keep the racing up,
Richard

Sorry to hear that chap. Keep well. The more air/drying up you can get the better without it getting infected.

Hydrocolloids are amazing on the right wounds, just leave them on and all this fresh skin grows underneath like something off Alien, much less scarring that way. It does need to be completely clean though, and you can only get them for fairly small wounds, not real belters.
Any good source at non-bank breaking prices? My own mini tip from yesterday - which I picked up elsewhere - is to smear a decent amount of antiseptic cream on the damaged bit of arse, and smear vaseline on the back of the <cough> non-stick dressing. Last nights dressing change was a two minute and largely pain free job in contrast to the 25 minutes of agony resulting in me almost passing out as the dressing had adhered itself to my leg with the ferocity of cornflakes to an old cereal bowl.
Having binned it myself and done a fairly good job at skinning my right elbow, I had it cleaned up at A&E, dressing changed a few days later (the dressings had iodine patches in them but no creams etc), then after having it dressed for about a week I got fed up, took it all off, picked off all the crud & there was some lovely red skin underneath and a slightly deeper cut/scab which I'm now leaving open. It's a bugger if I knock it but it's healing quite well.
The stitches are out my knee but the cuts there are still very deep so I'm keeping that covered up with dry dressings every day
Oh and to try and minimise any scarring I'm using a few drops of Argan oil after the morning ablutions (Bio Oil etc will do just as well too)

Have you seen the proper skin patches. Duoderm is one of them..
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Duoderm-10x10cm-hydrocollo...

These days it's gone beyond a good scrub and some Detol
These patches stop scabbing and speed the healing process.

Apply it and leave it on for a few days. Re-apply in need. It’s breathable, fairly resistant to water, and heals wounds quickly. Just place it over the wound without putting any ointment on it and let the wound heal inside. It will get moist and smelly underneath, but it “retains wound contact with the natural wound exudate which contains vital nutrients for growing cells, and white blood cells to prevent infection “. It’s like miracle skin. You’ll never get a scab with this stuff. For big wounds, keeping them moist is the key to comfort whilst healing and faster healing.
