I'm looking at buying an E36 (320, 323 or 325) coupe at the moment. I have a budget of £4K so am expecting something around the K-M reg bracket with some miles on the clock.
What in particular do i need to look out for, i've hear the rear beam bushes tend to go but know nothing more than that.
Any help greatfully received.
Cheers

I sold my 325i coupe (6 months ago) k reg and bought an M3 Evo now.
The 325i which I owned for three years never skipped a beat! Serviced reguarly of course.
Sold it with 97k on the clock for £3350.
I would go for the 325i if given the choice as its pretty fast, mine had 192BHP which to be honest is enough for everyday driving. If you get the BMW mags at the back they rate the 323i as the best!
Good luck hunting and hope this helps

Try www.carstats.co.uk they seem to have basic stats for most cars.

I thought the 328i had 192bhp and the 325i had less? (about 170bhp?)
No, the 323 had 170bhp , the E36 325 had 192bhp. The 328i had 193bhp..
or was it the other way round?
The 323 has around 160bhp... why 1bhp difference between 325 and 328??? Thats gotta be wrong mate
Well - just scoured the internet and I can find no definitive guide to E36 model power differences??

Surprising maybe, but those figures (170/192/193) are correct. The biggest difference between the 325 and 328 is that the latter has a lot more torque!
Don't forget, BHP wins pubs conversations, torque wins races!

I just fancy a change at the mo and my mates 328i sport is a gorgeous one - he'll let me have it for £5k too. I was with him when he bought it about 3 years back for £14k from a dealer and it's still in top notch condition.
I have considered an M3 Evo but I did some research on these a while back and summised that if the VANOS system went down I wouldn't be able to afford to fix it! Apart from that, I'd have one!
For 5K it's a great motor which will go on for years and years and still with the new 3 on the way does not look dated like so many other older cars. IMHO!
As far as the Vanos system you are bang on - ive had a replacement with a 2 year warrenty so no probs there.
Only need to sell mine to help fund our house extension otherwise id keep it forever!!!!
Cheers

Bloody lovely cars - If it wasn't for the VANOS system worry I'd have had a evo ages ago!
get one with BMW extended warranty and no worries. And you'll know whether the previous owner was tight and uncarinf. 12k should be enough for decent late E36 M3 Evo with low miles. Ah Estoril Blue.

None evo M3's seem a good idea but they seem to all be very high mileage cars for the money and not really enough performance difference or visual difference to a normal 3 series to justify the insurance premium

The Evo is very very fast, but it needs to be revved.. oh and the noise , my scooby feels faster becuase of the turbos, but is'nt close.
One mag got 0-100 in 12.2 secs!
I would however agree that the 328i sport is a very good car.
