Just purchased first Boxster 986 3.2s on 04 plate with basic radio/CD player. What can I do to upgrade to the better Bose esque version or similar performance, door speakers, amp where etc. Thanks

I wouldn't bother with Bose as its crap. Have a look at this thread http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=112...

That seems a bit too high end for me and my budget, just wondered what the standard Bose upgrade gives you and try to replicate that.

As soon as we got a 986 my wife wanted to use an Ipod. I looked at new door cards for extra speakers, rear shelf speakers etc and it all ended up a bit expensive. In the end I bought a cheap Sony head unit where the Ipod plugs into a tray behind face, and changed the speakers for alpines. So she has her Ipod and much better sound for £140.

Thanks for the replies. I like the originality of the existing head unit so wanted to beef up steathily if possible, what is the norm for the Bose factory upgrade, is it door card speakers and an amplifier located somehwhere?

Thanks

I think a Bose retrofit would be horrendously expensive. From memory, it has 11 speakers (including a subwoofer behind the seats) and an amp in the front boot. I'd have thought the wiring and new interior panels alone would be expensive.

I have got Bose on my 987 and I do like it. It is not the last word in sound quality, but it is clear and goes loud enough to listen with the roof off at speed.

Probably the best option is to replace the speakers in the original positions and perhaps investigate if the original head unit has a pre-out allowing you to use an external amp. I would have thought a £200 after market amp will be at least as good as the Bose item which would cost a lot more.

I have been very happy with the optional sound package (amp plus door speakers) in my '02.

In terms of uprated speakers, I saw a post on here from Jackal recently where he said Hertz [DSK130's] were good - not a brand I have come across before but perhaps worth a look.

Your '04 will have the MOST system so you will need to factor that into your plans.

I'm not an expert on this but it's something to do with fibre optics - see more here ===>
