Lyon - Clermont Ferrand - Cognac

I'll be doing this cross-country route this summer, stopping overnight near Clermont Ferrand.

Other that just using google maps and satnav software to find fun routes by playing with the 'avoid' function, has anyone got any specific routes or roads, or things to see along the way that they can recommend?

I was contemplating making more of a detour and doing Millau (again) but it's a bit out of the way and I've done it before.

I did an excellent trip down to Clemont Ferrard and the surrounding area a couple of years ago. In my view it's a very underrated area for excellent driving roads.

This thread has some useful ideas and links to an older thread which again gives some details of good roads in the area.
