Rain Jacket Recommendations
Discussion
I'm looking for a highly breathable race jacket/cape for those days like today! I generally run extremely hot and my last rain jacket boiled me alive (Castelli Squadra). I've short listed the following jackets :
Rapha Pro team race cape
Gore oxygen goretex active jacket
Assos SturmPrinz Evo
Endura FS260 Pro Adrenaline race cape
Leaning towards the Gore due to the extra length at the back and better perhaps better value than the Rapha/Assos.
Like the idea of spending half as much again with the Endura cape but it looks baggy in the photos and I can't stand flapping fabric in the wind.
Any jackets that are race cut and fit in a jersey pocket that I may have missed?

Don't spend a lot - total waste of money. The best - or most expensive depending on your perspective - will never vent enough moisture to keep you dry on the inside. So if that's your key criteria buy cheap.
Gore et al only work properly when they're beading the water off and the crap you get off the roads through spray will soon remove the DWR finish.
I've had many different top of the range Gore etc jackets for mountaineering / climbing and NONE of then have ever kept me dry on the inside when working hard

Shame about the Decathlon jacket, looks almost identical to the Endura cape. Its difficult to tell without looking and at the quality of the fabric on all these jackets whether they are going to be suitable or not.
The other option it to bin the jacket idea altogether and look at technical jersey similar to the Castelli gabba for those changeable Spring/Summer/Autumn days.
Surprised about the Gore as it's supposed to be highly breathable but the reviews do say that's it fairs better as an all day in the wet jacket rather than a packable type.
So for the price of the Rapha I could get a Gabba Jersey and the Endura packable. Best of both worlds....hmm

They'll all be useless, especially if you;re the sort who run hot. You'll sweat so much you'll drown AND dehydrate at the same time, and no amount of claimed breathability (aside from cutting bleeding' great holes in the thing) will shift it. Been there, done that.Rapha Pro team race cape

Concentrate on staying warm when wet, and staying wet for as little time as possible i.e. fast drying stuff.

I think you might be right, settled on the Endura transparent rain gilet to keep the worst off.Concentrate on staying warm when wet, and staying wet for as little time as possible i.e. fast drying stuff.
For colder weather I use a merino baselayer and Rapha softshell, keeps me warm for a good few hours plus is impressively water resilient. For summer time rain I just accept in going to get wet, like you I run warm so pretty much whatever option I go for I end up wet, either from the outside or inside!
Great timing. I was about to post exactly this thread. I also run hot and was struggling to find something breathable enough. I was looking at a gilet + Castelli Gabba and Nanoflex warmers as the solution; the gilet hopefully taking the worst of the rain/spray and keeping the core windproof, with the heat being dumped out of the arms/armpits. Boil in the bag is not an option for medium/long rides and if the ride is short then I'll just MTFU and deal with it anyway.
Any feedback on how good the Gabba and Nanoflex option is?
My other route was the Rapha Rain Cape, but it sounds like even the more expensive jackets aren't really that breathable?

If you want a proper waterproof, not just a lightweight shell with DWR, then you can't beat the GORE Oxygen AS in my opinion.
If its hammering down outside and you don't need to take it off and stash it in a pocket, then it is the perfect jacket. It is very breathable and will cope well in spring/autumn, but on warm/hot days when it rains, you have to ask yourself if you really need it?
If however, you just want a jacket for days when it might rain and needs to be stashed in a pocket, then look at the plethora of lightweight shells with a DWR coating on them.

I tend to wear a Nike dry fit base layer if the weather looks changeable but it can become cold when wet. This wouldn't be a problem usually but I've a longish ride coming up with a few lengthy descents and if the weather turns it could get cool quickly. Decided on a thin merino wool base layer as if this gets wet it should keep me warm paired with a rain gilet means I hopefully won't overheat. I'll look at getting nanoflex arm warmers for Autumn I think.
Anyone wear a gabba during the summer? I'd have thought it would be too warm and more suited to Spring/Autumn

I run hot but I still wear a jacket when its pissing it down. I have a Rapha Rain Jacket and I find having the jacket and jersey open slightly when its not bouncing down helps manage the heat. If its stops raining I take it off. I wore mine for 3/4 of the Fred Whitton this year and trust me I was in a much better state than the folks who had foolishly not packed one.
