Who would you pick between the '66 Team and Todays?
Discussion
I know the game's changed massively, but out of the two teams who would make the team??
GK Banks......or Hart.......For me Banksy all the way
RB Cohen......or Johnson....No contest Cohen
CB J Charlton.or Cahill.....Big Jack Wins it for Me
CB B Moore....or Jagielka...Moore by a country mile
LB Wilson.....or Baines.....Baines by a small amount
DM Stiles.....or Gerrard....Too close to call, but probably SteveG by a whisker...
MF Ball.......or Lallana....Ball no contest
MF B Charlton.or Henderson..Bobby all the way
MF Peters.....or Rooney.....Shrek comfortably
MF Hunt.......or Wellbeck...Hunt easily
Fo Hurst......or Sturridge..For me too close to call...
So Over to you.....

I'd have Cahill over Jackie Charlton but I'd have Hurst over Sturridge and Peters over Shrek.
Assuming the team of 66 had today's training methods and nutrition, fitness levels etc. If you just picked up the team of 66 and dropped them in 2014, they wouldn't beat a League 1 side. The fastest players of 66 are slow by today's standards. And Nobby Stiles would be sent off after 10 seconds for a challenge that wouldn't have raised an eyebrow back then.

it would be interesting to have either:
a. the best Xi from each world cup pitted against each other OR
b. the overall best wc xi from each nation pitted against each other.
hard to justify any from teh current set up replacing anyone in a team that actually won teh bloody thing. although we haven't seen teh current crop play in the WC yet

Reminds me of the time one of the 'Lisbon Lions', a member of the 1967 European Cup winning Celtic team, was asked how the 1967 team would fare against the present day team. He thought a bit and said "we'd probably beat them by a goal". "Only a goal?" responded the interviewer. "Aye, well, some of us are getting on a bit you know..."

You can't be serious....none of the '66 team would make the 2014. Anybody who thinks otherwise is an idiot. It's like comparing. Graham Hills GP car with Nico Rosbergs.
As I said, I think we're assuming they have access to modern training methods, diet, and all the rest. Not just picking them up plonking them in the modern game.Gassing Station | Football | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
