I have a mk2 and the battery needs changing in the key, I assume there is no set time to get the battery out and back into the key, can you tell me the battery type please.

Erm, pop the back of the key fob off and look at the number on it? That way YOU know you've got the right battery type. It won't disconnect the battery so you'll lose nothing.

And they slide out in the black plastic round container - you don't need to unsolder anything even though it looks like that is required....Even with new batteries I find I have to be very close to the car to lock and unlock it compared to a 'modern' car.
