Clutch Adjustment
Discussion
Since fitting my new slave cylinder I have been unhappy with clutch engagement. It is right on the floor. I did lose the original setting on the rod when I was meesing about fitting the new unit. I now have the car up on axle stands and could adjust the clutch rod to make it longer and therefore improve the bite point. Is there any free play measurement or should I lengthen it until it feels 'about right'. Suggestions welcome.
Tony, maybe obvious but have you tried bleeding it again?
From my understanding of how things work the pushrod length shouldn't be too critical?
Too long and the slave cylinder piston will be pushed to the very back of the bore and there will be constant pressure on release bearing, clutch slip if taken to extremes.
Too short and slave cylinder piston will reach the end of its travel before the clutch is fully dis-engaged.
Between these extremes the slave cylinder piston will find its own resting place once the clutch is released, just off the pushrod. It has no reason to go back any further up the bore?
In effect hydraulic clutch operations are self adjusting.
How much use has it had since fitting?
When I coonverted my Taimar to hydraulic operation (using S Series parts) it "threw a couple of wobblies" before settling down.
Thanks for the advice guys. I bled the clutch again last night and I lengthened the pushrod this morning. I agree that the clutch should be self adjusting but I suspect that the slave was running out of travel. Test drive in a few minutes once I have buffed off the final polish coat.

I had no clutch at all after bleeding the system again. I had to bleed it for a third time!
If anyone wants help with bleeding their brakes I can help. I'll be right behind you...... A long way behind you.
Just think, if you leave home on tour you don't need brakes until you get to Dover.
But they are useful then.
