Sorry I know this topic has been done to death but I have just ordered the Raceproved ones form TVR Power and am going to fit them tonight. However I know they have an allen headed bolt to hold them in and someone had a very clever solution with a wing headed bolt or similar to make them easier to remove without an allen key but I can't find the post for the life of me.

Also, is there any knack to avoid the cross-threading issue which appears to be common?

Thanks

These are the babies. Work very nicely. Make sure you have them horizontal otherwise they foul the boot lid.

Ritchie , thanks very much for that, they were exactly the ones I was thinking of.

Also, has anyone fitted the raceproved clips themselves? I have just tried to fit them and the holes aren't even close to lining up with the original holes of the self-tappers. Have they really made clips that don't fit in the original holes??

The idea of widening one of the holes large enough to line up with the new clips will severely weaken the area it is going in to and it is only single skinned fiberglass in that section.

Any advice??

Mine were fairly accurate, but I did have to run a drill through them just to make the holes a little bit larger. I haven't had any issues since

I had to do the same, and IIRC, I put larger washers under the nuts to spread the load, and a smear of clear silicone to stop the weather getting in.

Very pleased with mine. Did an afternoon at Goodwood yesterday and rear screen didn't budge with the roof off.

Mine were quite a bit out so I used one original hole and drilled a new one on each side. I refixed them with self-tappers as I couldn't figure out how to get to the back side. Now I know you have to strip back the carpet and work blind, I'll eventually get around to doing it properly. Unless they pull themselves through overtightening, I'm not worried about a blowout as it has the later larger screen and I don't do more than 170 with the roof off....

One thing I hadn't seen discussed previously is the poor grip with the bare metal clips as they come. I added a pair of kitchen door stoppers (the soft dome buttons that stop doors going bang) to each to improve this and stop any fretting. Surprised they don't come with foam pads.

I fitted a pair last week - and had the same issue with the holes not lining up with the self tappers and used a small round file to elongate the new ones I drilled, (5mm diameter). I also had an issue where one of the socket head screws had a malformed hex depression which meant it couldn't be used so I had to replace that screw with another which luckily I had bought for another job. It's a bit of a fiddle getting the nuts and washers onto the bolts under the rear bodywork and you need a 7mm A/F spanner to hold them when tightening the assembly. My set of parts came with 4 domed self adhesive plastic buttons to stop the clips damaging the rear screen. I also agree you've got to be careful not to cross thread the main retention bolts but if you press the clips hard against the screen before starting to insert the bolts it's much less likely. I will stay with the allen key bolts as it's just an additional security item to prevent access to the car - however unlikely that maybe.
I was also surprised at the quality of the original moulded clips that I removed as mine had major air holes/porosity which would have made them very susceptible to failure.

Rhys - I fitted an alternative bolt to the plastic wing headed one as I personally think they look a bit better - see image:

I got them from a company called Berger Tools - heres the link: http://www.berger-tools.co.uk/series.asp?CategoryI...

They were less than a couple of quid each with a small delivery charge and are definitely easier to use than the allen bolts supplied.

This is the best solution I have seen. Thank you so much, I will order these asap.

Just as another alternative I used some of these

I can't remember the supplier but I think it was these people:

Works really well, with enough leverage to get them tight but they're not in the way of the boot when it's shut.

My clips came direct from receproved and already had some small rubber dots to stick onto the clip so they grip the screen really well.

Still have a squeaky screen unless I spray silicone every couple of trips!
