Well, as the pontification over Michael Schumacher's greatness continues, I was wondering: who's the best?

Michael Schumacher? Alex Yooung? Richard Petty? Colin McRae?

As for Schumacher well, he's good, but if I could get my digits around an F1 steering well I'm sure I could...

I would suggest Derek Bell, Jacky Ickx, Senna and Pedro Rodrigues as possibles.

Come on, throw your two cents in!

After watching a documentary about racing drivers it has to be
1.Sterling Moss
2.Jim Clark
3.Ayrton Senna

Quote "Sterling Moss, the most naturally gifted racing driver there has ever been" Unquote.

Cheers

Stall/spin/crash/vomit in the car?

I think I could safely bet my left boll*ck that driving an F1 car is no easy feat.

I think it has to be something along the lines of.....
Schumacher,
Senna,
Jim Clark,
Fangio,
Prost,
Stewart.
Difficult question though and there will be many, many different opinions.

Animal hints at the difficulty in comparing different categories of driver and with todays specialisation it is even more difficult.

Just to throw my 2pence worth in has anybody seen John Cleland drive a single seater, natural talent shines through and he is mighty, mighty impressive but to my mind Marc Surer knocks all the current crowd for six.

Best ever.. its got to be Jim Clark,er er or Moss (or Fangio if he is driving an open wheeler).

Fangio
Senna
Schumacher (I hate including him, but have to)
Hunt (But more for his off track skills than on)
Eklund

However, I do think Raikkonen does have the potential to be a true great...

I would say that with traction control, auto-boxes etc. I would say that driving an F1 was probably dead easy. I think the point you're trying to make is whether or not you could drive it fast.

I would say that its not as hard as people think (or ITV says) it is. New boys on the block seem to get on the pace pretty quickly after relatively short careers in other racing. Jenson Button, Kimi Raikkonen to name just two of the competative young 'uns.

I would say GT racing and rally would require more skill than a modern F1 car.

I dont think there is an answer to this as the machines used are so different. What you would need is a time machine and selection of tracks and cars.

Would Fangio know what to do with traction and launch control or would Shomaker know how to handle a 6000bhp top fuel dragster.

An extreme example I saw recently is the goodwood festival of speed. Now I bet the soapbox things came down the hill faster that the 11 litre drag racer went up it, dose'nt prove either is a better driver.

This will probably never be answered

Heard/read that McRae offered to swap with Schoomy for a bet..... Schoomy turned it down because it would be "too dangerous, with all those trees and loose stones n stuff" (didn't want ot be shown up as not that good afterall more like)

It was in last weeks' Motoring News, and at the time of going to press, Shumacher had not been formally approached about the offer. Wouldn't they need to invite the CART and Autocross boys as well though? Just because they do not have such a high profile in the UK, does not necessarily mean they have lesser skills!

Have a look at the second from last paragraph. Enzo Ferrari was his mechanic!!

First heard about this top geezer when Murray Walker described him as the greatest racing driver ever.

I remember an old article about Senna coming to england for a group thrach on some rally cars for Car and Car Conversions. His team were a little miffed when he turned up for his next race with blisters on his hands.
