Southampton,talk to me

Ocean Village is meant to be 'the place to be'. It's certainly up and coming. Chapel end of St Mary's isn't bad either. Not very much council housing, City Annex is gorgeous. As low in the crime stats as Northam is, I wouldn't be looking to buy there- some very nasty people around there and very uninspiring properties. Same goes for Newtown, it's a s
thole. Polygon is mostly students, some nice houses but a high rate of burglaries due to vast amounts of dozy students living there and leaving windows/doors open, etc. If my money was going on a property in Southampton, it'd be either the Waterfront or Chapel.
Nightlife- you've got the usuals, such as Bedford Place and London Road. Both are massive chavtraps, have to deal with a lot of fights/violence around there, especially on a Friday/Saturday night. If you want a cheap pull though...
There's also Onslow Road. Has Lennon's, which isn't bad at all, and plenty of student-y type places down the Bevois Valley end. Plenty of stuff in the town centre to get involved in too, depends what you're after- brass rubbing isn't high on the list. If you like overly packed clubs with cheap drinks, then you'll like Southampton.

I've lived there for 15 years, having moved down from Newcastle to get married in about '97. It obviously depends on what you're used to, but as far as a social life goes, you couldn't get much more of a disparity between two cities. Southampton, in recent years, seems to have got noticeably quieter in the city centre at weekends in that regard, but the places mentioned in the posts above still seem to have people there.
If you can avoid living too near the city centre, I would, there are some nicer places on the outskirts, Hamble, Botley, Warsash and suchlike.
It's a good place for work, my impression is that it's affluent enough for people only not be working if they don't want to be, being self employed seems to be a real point of pride in the area.
Southampton's been good to me, I'm glad I've lived there, however it's simply a statement of fact to say I won't miss it too much when I head back up north at some point. Not a criticism, my priorities have changed as I've grown older.

There are some nice areas as noted, but there is nothing to do other than shop, or drink.
If you don't mind driving, you'll be fine, and some of the surrounding places are very nice as noted.
The alternative is Bournemouth or Portsmouth, both a lot going on and with a beach and access to the New Forest and the south downs respectively.
