I am looking at getting a car which will pretty much be a beater for going from A to B, so I'm not really fussed about getting comprehensive or even fire and theft - unless it's cheaper of course.

Car will most likely be a 94-98 VW Golf or Polo, petrol 1.4 or under.

As for me, I'm a 26 year old bloke, I only just got my full UK licence last year. Previous to that I held a foreign licence for about 8 years with three points on it - no suspensions or disqualifications. I held my previous policy for about 7-8 years with no claims.

I'm looking for suggestions on what company I should go with, even just narrowing it down to 5 or 6 would be helpful because there's a million out there. Cheers!

Try the comparison sites first - a good broker might be able to find an insurer that will accept your previous licence and get you a lower premium, but their premium might wipe out the savings.

Oh and a quick word of warning - I once insured a car 'third party only' - it caught fire on the road, burnt to the ground - I was expecting nothing from them for the car, that much was obvious - it was the bill for the ambulance (they charge for road stuff it seems, because the insurance co generally pays it), the recovery and repairs to the road that surprised me - came to about £3k from memory.
