My wife and I are both in final salary schemes and expect to be able to retire on these with an income that comfortably meets our needs in about 10 years time at age 60/61.
I also have a small private pension fund which I put together a few years ago by consolidating several bits and pieces of company schemes from former employments into a single fund. This is currently standing at around £25k and projected to reach low to mid £30k at age 60 in 9 years time. Projections for this are an annuity of around £700 which in my opinion is next to useless.
I'm looking for other options for this fund which to be honest I can risk losing completely if there are good prospects. I'm thinking about:-
1. Approaching my final salary administrator and asking if I can transfer this fund to buy AVCs
2. Using this fund to buy commercial property (I live in an area where I could probably pick up a corner shop or something to let for this kind of money)
3 Leave it to mature and shop around for a better annuity at the time.

Any thought or other suggestions?

If the Government honour their proposal in the last Budget, you will be able to access the fund as unlimited drawdown. You could then take it all in one tax year and delay the occupational scheme early retirement a year.

Use the £25k now towards a BTL deposit. £30k in nine years' time will be worth eff all in retirement terms,
