We are thinking of buying a Volvo T5 estate (to replace a standard volvo 850, not the chimaera). I know that there are one or two PHers who have them as second cars.

Any advice on ownership? Likes or dislikes? Known faults?

Thanks

Richard

I bought a new T5R Estate in 1995. Did 50k mls in two years then sold it. Great car. Dead reliable, fast and comfortable. It was uprated to 280 bhp and as a result did about 5000 mls on a pair of front tyres. It also did not really have adequate quality brakes and had new front discs and pads (under warranty) with every service. Other than that not a single thing needed done apart from routine servicing. Imagine that , TVR people , not one single fault in 50000 mls !! They are terrific cars, and far from many peoples idea of a Volvo. I think if you can stretch to it a T5R is a lot better than the ordinary T5.

Volvo's are great cars for parts chasers, I run a 940turbo and in the last 2 years have only ever replaced the brake pads and spark plugs (Oil & Filters aside), Before that I had a 240 estate, it was the master of it's own downfall by being too reliable, It died on the M5 when the radiator collapsed due to exessive rust as it was 18 years old! I would always buy a volvo as the family car.

Well what can I say? Ignore the image and enjoy the stealth features....

Damm fast, comfy, all the toys, reliable - and if you live in Leicestershire your TVR & Volvo needs can be serviced in one place... (went to TMS for a TVR and came back with a T5 - got the TVR week later elsewhere).

As mentioned above only issue is front tyre wear - but get a T5 not a T5R and you should be ok.

Enjoy (god have I just said that about a Volvo???)

The T5s are good fun.

Have a look here www.volvoclub.org.uk/forum_main.htm in the Performance Car Section at the bottom. Loads of info here on what kinds of things go wrong with them. But mine is reliable, quick and good fun to drive. And you can cart all your worldly goods around in the boot!

EDIT: Forgot to mention - the only problem is that if you drive it hard on the motorway, many people assume you're a plod. So you do tend to get a bit of holdup in the outside lane occasionally!

You do know that she'll just power slide it out of the drive like she does your TVR?
Ex BiB cars go cheap at auction and have excellent service histories. Thought of that route?

Ha! Yep, okay, I hold my hands up. I drive an 850 T5!! Well, sometimes anyway. I'll tell you about the other two cars some other time.

Thanks, everyone. bought a T5, picking it up tomorrow.

this means that the Chimaera is safe from the impending doom of fatherhood.
