I suppose it depends if the guy who bought it did a good job putting it together.
I bought mine from minisport as a short engine kit, and apart from the problem I had with the bearings for the crank it has been very good.
Also minisport are very good if you have questions or are having problems with the build.

I can never quite see the point of buying an engine kit for self-assembly. After all, if you want a really good engine, the way to achieve it is careful measurement, pre-assembly, re-machining to optimise all the tolerances, accurate cam timing-in and very clean and careful final assembly. This you do yourself, so all the kit supplier is providing are the basic machined components (block, crank, etc) and the new parts (cam, pistons, bearings, etc).
A better way, IMHO, is to find a really good local machine shop, strip it all down yourself, take it to the machine shop and tell them EXACTLY what you want doing. Then put the engine together yourself, or get someone who knows how to properly assemble/build an engine to do it for you.
The key to it all is accurate machining to remove the tolerances and cleanliness during assembly.
After all, you can always ask for help and advice on here if you need it. You then get the engine you actually want, not what someone else has decided you might like.
