E70 X5 drive shaft service bulletin/recall?
Discussion
Have brought my car in this morning to have the winter wheels swapped for the summers (tempting fate, I know) and the dealership waved a service bulletin at me requiring a check/replacement of one or more driveshafts. Can't see anything online about this - anyone else seen this? (2011 xDrive40d).

Bit of info here for you:http://xdrivers.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,8990.0.html
Thanks for the pointer guys - no fault found on mine (november 2010 build). I did however ask Menzies to drain off the 1l of oil that Stratstone Leeds had overfilled the oil by when they sold it to me. Afternoon....thread resurrection...!
Looks like my front driveshaft may have failed, resulting in fairly hefty damage to the internals, diff, possibly engine etc...
Anyone had this on their 2010 X5 and did you get any recourse from the manufacturer?
Looking at possibly at £15k bill on a car worth £18k.
Cheers.

Is it under warranty or are BMW offering any kind of good will?
Not under warranty but only 48k miles...
BMW want me to recover it to them, pay for strip down / diagnostic..(you can see the driveshaft has snapped...) then they’ll tell me what they will (or won’t) do...
So if they say they won’t cover it, my car is then in pieces in a garage 15 miles away that I’ll have to pay them to reconstruct even to get it recovered back to me...
Bought circa 12-15 BMW’s since 2000....I’ll see how this pans out before deciding what to buy next time....

I don't know if you've had a chance to read the xdrivers thread. It seems, especially on a staggered setup having '*' rated tyres seems essential. There was a check BMW UK did on the prop shaft a few years ago as a preventative measure, do you know if yours has had that?
Did you have any warning it was going to let go?

Thought I should update this thread...as you don't always hear when things turn out right..
Final bill including new engine, gearbox, diff, prop, steering rack and loads of other bits was nearly £19k....
BMW asked me to contribute 20% of the labour which was £1200..
So basically I now have a completely new drivetrain plus lots of other work with a new two year warranty.
Pretty good outcome and I have to say BMW have been brilliant
If anyone has the same model from 2010 I would say it is worth checking of your car has been inspected and had the prop replaced.
Cheers for the input peeps!

I’ve had my prop shaft coupling break only heard slight vibrations one day and the next it broke nearly causing an accident on a roundabout with my 2 small children in the car with me. BMW are telling me it’s going to cost me 1k to fix however only had the car services a couple of months ago by them and they said everything was fine. Is this a manufacturing fault?Final bill including new engine, gearbox, diff, prop, steering rack and loads of other bits was nearly £19k....

How did u get your case resolved with them?
The fault I had was a sheared propshaft...it completely broke in two leaving the prop spinning at 3000rpm in the engine bay....causing rather a lot of damage.
The fault related specifically to the prop shaft, on vehicles in a particular period during 2010 (Apr-Sept ish I think).
Sounds like you have a different problem, however it’s worth searching on the net for similar faults to see if there have been other cases.
BMW were very good, but you need to do your homework on the fault before going back to them.
Best of luck!

Hi,
I have a Nov 2010 E70 40d.
It broke down last week with a Big Bang. Similar situation to you where I now have a car recovered to my home but not sure where to take it next.
I’ve contacted BMW about the recall but not heard anything yet.
It seems I have both engine and gearbox damage. 🙈🙈

Hi Mr. Vert
Really hoping you can help!
My 2010 X5 prop shaft broke while my wife was driving at 60mph on the M25.
Needless to say smashed up a lot of the car!
It’s going to BMW today, not under warranty, how did you manage to get them to pay for the repairs?
Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks

Hi guys,
Maybe you can give me some advise.
I have problem with my BMW X5 2010. While I was driving my bmw made sound, sounded as a flat tyre. I puled over to check, but nothing was wrong. Again drove it and it made the same noise. I stopped the car and in the time-frame of 10 min all the engine oils pore out on the street. Luckily I was near my house and not on a motorway. I had to get high up truck to recover my car to a garage. From the garage checked and they said that the prop shaft snapped and made hole in the oil sump, possibly the engine was effected too.
The garage call BMW to check if that was recall, and BMW confirmed that is a recall on the propshaft, but they have to investigate to see if the fault is related.
Now the BMW is with BMW garage and engineer will be looking to see if they will take responsibility for this fault.
If not will be a lot of money to be done.
Did someone had similar problem and how did it go?

Hi guys
I had the same problem on my 2011 X5 40d I was driving I heard a noise sounded like a flat tyre or something pulled over couldn’t see anything so carried on for only about 5 minutes slow it got worse pulled over and oil coming from under the car had it recorded to the garage I use and found out the prop shaft had broken at the front and gone into the sump told me to check to see if there was any recalls on it found out there was a recall for front propeller shaft check or replace. I took my car in for a recall about 6 months ago on the heater they didn’t say anything about the shaft. I have called Bmw told them what’s happened the said to call Bmw assist they will recover it a see if it is the prop shaft that they should of checked I’m having it recorded tomorrow. Has anyone else had the same problem and did they repair it with no cost?

Found this thread and thought I’d post about my snapped prop shaft.
2012 E70 X5 3.0d SE 82,000 miles. Owned from new. Serviced at BMW until 2017, Indy since.
Never had a recall letter from BMW, or had it mentioned to me by them.
Pulled away from a roundabout and there was a bang and no power. Pulled over and oil leaking everywhere from underneath.
Called AA and spoke to Indy garage. Luckily Indy was aware of issue / recall. Spoke to BMW main dealer and they knew about it as well. AA took car to them.
Discussed with main dealer and that I was aware of problem / recall, etc.. Next day they called and confirmed snapped prop shaft and badly damaged gearbox. They would seek approval from BMW to cover the repair.
Following day they called again and confirmed BMW had agreed to cover cost and they had ordered new gearbox. Picked the car up a few days later all fixed. Invoice showed it would have cost c.£8k.
So credit to main dealer and BMW for sorting and fixing the car. Hopefully, this will be useful info for anyone else facing the same.
