I bought a pair of Oakleys the other day. I've worn them for 3 rides. While cleaning them today - having used only the pouch / cleaner that came in - I noticed that a layer was coming off. They're still usable - no choice at the mo - and obviously I can take them back for a refund / swap but has anyone else had the same?

Frustrating when a quality product fails so quickly and always a hassle to replace.

Never had an issue with oakley, I've owned numerous pairs including goggles plus bags, clothes, shoes and got to say all have worn well. Get them replaced it shouldn't be a problem, although I got the oakley lens cleaning kit and that says to not rub with the microfibre cloth but to just place it on. Works a treat.

Had a pair do that but only after about 3 or 4 years. Started peeling in patches, possibly down to seawater, sweat or sun cream. Have heard of a few cases but never within days of buying.

I've got 3 other pairs of Oakleys and my wife has 3 pairs and none of them have been affected in the slightest - some are getting on for 10 years old.

I always clean them by rubbing with the inside of the bag - never been an issue

Cheers.

Definite back to shop job. Just hope they have spare lenses in stock as the frames are ltd edition.

I have got a few pairs of Oakleys and find the older versions soooooo much better in the lens department. I had exactly the same problem you described with a pair of Oakley Gascans. The outer coating literally flaked off, took them back to the shop and they said they could send them off to be evaluated and then repaired at cost! Think I'll stick to my old ones.

My experience with Oakleys - and I still love them - after 15 odd years of buying and using them:

Buy a pair of Oakleys, and use them as normal sunglasses = no problems at all. For example, I have a pair of metal 'E-Wires' that I bought in 1998. Being metal framed and quite 'business-looking' I have only ever used them as ordinary, day-to-day shades, which also go well in a 'formal' capacity - i.e. look nice with shirts and suits. They are now 16 years old, and basically still look as good as they did when new.

However - buy a pair of 'sporty' Oakleys, and use them when running, cycling etc...and get a regular amount of body sweat running down the inside of the lenses? Well then the coating on the lenses starts to flake and peel off.

I've suffered this problem on quite a few pairs of my 'sport use' Oakleys - and it is quite annoying. However, that said - every time I have had this issue, I have returned them to Oakley UK in one of their dedicated returns boxes (call them to get one sent to you) and the lenses have been changed for new ones every time, no quibbles or questions asked.

As a manufacturer who strives to keep their customers happy - for me, Oakley are right up there at the top of the list!

One story to show how - I went on holiday once, and at the airport, realised I had left my Oakleys at home. But happily, this gave me an excuse to BUY ANOTHER PAIR from the Sunglass Hut at Gatwick (man maths ensued biggrin )

On the FIRST DAY of my holiday, my rather dense G/F at the time jammed them into the hotel room's safe carelessly, scratching both lenses to buggery yikes

When I got home, I sent them to Oakley UK for repair, quite happy to pay to do so. One of the repair chaps phoned me when he received them, told me it would be around 60 quid to replace the lenses, as it was my fault they were damaged.

I told him the story about forgetting my other Oakleys and buying a brand-new pair at the airport, only for my G/F to wreck them a day later - and he laughed his t**s off at the other end of the phone, and once he had calmed down, said to me between further occasional laughs: 'oh mate, heheh, that's funny, heheh, you must have been SO ANGRY, heheh - did you hit her, heheh?! Ah, look, after that story - actually, don't worry about it - heheheh - i'll replace them for free for you mate, heheh! You'll have them back in a few days - enjoy!'

Now that's good customer service, is it not?! biggrin

Yep, Oakley customer service is some of the very best there is. You've definitely been very unfortunate: let them know and they will make amends.

Cool. Glad the service is good. (Something I've noticed with Apple)

Hoping I don't have to send them away though as the lenses are replaceable so it's not a major job to take them out.

Maybe the store will play ball when I get back to the UK.
