Always liked Mob 1..... But alas I have run out!

Valvoline VR1 Racing 20w 50.
High in zddp, good for the valve train I'm told.
Old fashioned engine needs old fashioned oil. Most of the modern oils are just too thin.
( and I'm a thick old fashioned owner. )

I'm looking forward to the TT weekend Steve, have you cured that leaking valley gasket now?.

ETA: I believe Phillpot makes his own oil - Phillips Oil.
Or perhaps it's a family thing.
A bit of nepotism if you ask me

I'm not sure. By which I mean I really don't know. However the 10w indicates thinner when cold and the 60 means thicker at 100c (not sure how much thicker) these are old engines with wide tolerances so it's probably ok . It appears to have different properties because of its different composition.

I also remember being told moving to and from synthetic to mineral can cause leaks at seals but that was probably more to do with a lack of seal conditioners

Got my VR1 from the motor factors on the local trading estate!

Dont forget these engines are really 70's technology. They do not have the very close tolerances, narrow working parameters, complex metallurgy etc of the current generation of engines. They have large sumps and big pumps and a lot of fairly crude 'splash it everywhere in large quantities' lubrication. 20/50 mineral was the oil matched to these engines when new.

The VR1 is a bit OTT but I do push the revs a bit and I want to get the best life I can from the motor. I liked their 'bike oils as well so there is a bit of brand loyalty.

Eurocarparts have it on special offer now & again, or any good motor factors should be able to supply it.
Speedyparts are good for me, about 1/2 a mile away & the guys there are the best.They enjoy a TVR obscure parts challenge & rarely fail to come up trumps on my strange requests.
