I'm in the process of applying for a mortgage and have just been told by Nationwide that they won't lend to me because I haven't lived in the UK continuously for the last 3 years. I was living overseas until April 2013 but didn't think it would be a problem getting a mortgage since I've been back here and working for a while.

Tesco Bank seem to be ok with it (although needed to go through the underwriters)so was just wondering if anyone else has seen this issue or knows any other lenders who would be friendly given my circumstances.

Yep, Nationwide along with other lenders won't consider lending where there is a foreign address within the last three years.

Unfortunately it's not quite as simple as stating who else will do it as it will depend on your details as a whole such as your LTV, income and outgoings etc.

Just a quick update for anyone who might be interested. The following lenders don't seem to be bothered about me having lived outside of the UK in recent years;

RBS
Santander
TSB
Clydesdale Bank
First Direct
HSBC

What you mean is those lender's won't rule it out automatically. It still may be the single most significant issue when they score you and could still torpedo your application.

If you are low risk (i.e. Low LTV, Low income multiple, double income, well serviced and modest credit history, established employment record, no dependants etc etc) then a foreign address probably won't matter with those lenders. Throw in a bit of self-employment, low deposit and a dependant spouse and the address could tip it to a rejection.

Cynical? Moi?
