Helmet options

I recently had a bit of an off which resulted with me landing on my head, so decided its time for a new lid. I do 50:50 road bike riding and MTB riding would it be best to buy an MTB helmet now and use for both then eventually get a road helmet or is a road helmet ok for MTB?

Seek out a road like, and use that on dirt: it'll be fine for most things. Doesn't bother the XC boys. Some lids offer a removable peak if such things matter.

There is nothing different in helmets aimed at MTB and road from a safety point of view, they pass the same tests.

MTB helmets tend to be larger, heavier and have peaks (mostly removable). Road helmets tend to be lighter, better ventilated and recently "aero".
There is a large crossover when it comes to XC helmets, which are the same. Most XC racers will used a lightweight helmet aimed more towards the road market.

Some MTB helmets provide more cover round the back of the head than road helmets do. From what you have said though I think you're probably best off going for a road style helmet with a peak. Something like this: http://www.tredz.co.uk/.Abus-S-Force-Peak-MTB-Helm...

Best advice for you though is to go into a shop and try loads of different makes and models on. Don't just buy one online because Steve at the pub says it's wonderful. Steve probably has a fat square head...

I recently spent ages looking and reading reviews. The conclusion I came to was that a Helmet with the MIPS system was worth the extra. In the end I bought a Scott Linn with MIPS.

Comfortable and no where near as expensive as the POC helmets with MIPS.

You really need two helmets. I have a giro feature for the mtb, it has a lot more protection at the back which I find quite reassuring. It's not that much heavier than the road helmet which is a specialized echelon. Both were under £50. The echelon is nice and comfy, it also has plenty of vents. both have dial adjustment to get the fit right. Although a good helmet will do both, I'd worry about a lack of protection. Google images and you should see what I mean.
