3.2 Ventilation
Discussion
Hi have a 1989 3.2 and as usual the ventilation/heating is very poor. I am looking to see what I can do and have had a suggestion that I could convert it to what was in the SC, where at least I can manually choose heat or cold, rather than be stuck with one or the other (or none).
Has anyone done anything similar or had any other ways of improving this aspect of the car? If so what have you done and where is best to source the parts?
Thanks

Is yours working properly? My 89 3.2 was much better than earlier 911s I have owned. Rusted heater flaps and seized / broken actuators under dial controller, and seized fresh air blowers / footwell fans being most common faults. You can go back to old cable system but why not fix what you have?Has anyone done anything similar or had any other ways of improving this aspect of the car? The heating is well complicated and strange.
Check the boxes at the back, as well as the vents that open in the engine bay there are more inside that open. If like me you have one side giving heat when it's all off and the vents are completely open then it is probably the internal flaps stuck open.
I think these flapper boxes are about £80 a side or can be dismantled and cleaned up.
Changing the motor in the fresh air system makes a massive difference and can be done quite quickly. The motor (not available fromPorsche) is about £80 delivered. Porsche will charge £400 for the whole unit.

As the other guys have said you must have some issues with the system. Flapper boxes are the place to start. When it works the system works very well.
I've back dated mine as it is a race car.
The fresh air slider controls on the dash etc remain as original. We fitted a single lever next to the hand brake and a seperate fan switch on the dash purely for heat.

Thanks for all the advice. It doesn't have air con, just the standard operations. I agree there must be something wrong with it. I did for a while just get hot air constantly out of the windscreen vents, which made it unbearably hot in the car, even with the sun roof open. Now we don't seem to get anything even with the fan on, so can't demist the car in the cold or wet.
I will take a look at it further and see if I can't get the original functions working.
Cheers

+1. If working properly the heat output can be epic and does not disappoint. It's worth looking at the cables from auto-heat to the flapper boxes as well.
I suspected my flapper boxes had gone...but it turned out to be the cable that had failed. Not an exepnsive fix!
The motors don't like lack of use much as in the first 6 months Ihad mine (it had done 3,000kms in the preceding 7 years) all 5 motors (3 x hot, 1 x cold and 1x AC) motors failed and I also needed a new condenser fan as well.
Those were fun bills!

depending on the condition of your car I would start with the flapper boxes and hoses - they could be split or the flapper boxes just gummed up.
might also be worth putting the ignition on and turning the heat dial between the seats. If the control motors and stuff are ok you should hear a whiring noise as the motor attempts to close the flaps on the underside of the car

NP. So could be a few things with the control mechanism - the motor or pcb are broken or the control board/pcb is not getting a temp reading from inside the cabin so doesn't know if additional heat is required.

If you haven't found them already, Impactbumpers and the Pelican parts websites have a ton of info on this stuff.
