First Road Bike for 10 Year Old

Hi All,

My nephew is keen for a road bike, and even saved a chunk of money from his pocket money towards one!

Has anyone recommendations for what to consider as a good first bike? I guess budget would be pretty low (£300 to £500 I suppose) compared to the usual requests but it would be good for him to get something decent.

Any thoughts?

My 11 year old has a Beinn 26, it's very well made, light and the levers, etc are all designed for the smaller person

The OP wants a road bike for a 10yr old, and you send him a 3 year old thread about adult road bikes?

Anyway, Isla Bikes seem very popular at the kids triathlon club where I live. Not cheap, but will hold it's value well for when he outgrows it.

Standard considerations apply:

- Will it look good?
- Will he want to ride it?
- Will his mates be jealous, or will they take the piss?

On that basis what about the 24" Moda Major? Looks like a TDF bike that got shrunk in the wash!

24" wheels will probably be too small. When my youth was ten he was on a Dawes Espoir 3000, which has 26" wheels, and he grew out of that within 12 months. He's now on a 700c wheeled Kinesis Crosslight.

The Modo is also very expensive for what it is.

Surely he\you should be looking 2nd hand, £500 is a lot of money to be splashing out for a bike he could outgrow in 12 months.

How tall is he? Once kids get to around 4'11" they can often be fitted onto most manufacturers' smallest adult road frame.
