X100S / RX100?

Evening gents,

Currently the owner of a few Nikon DSLRs (D800 / D7100) and 4 or 5 lenses.
After my last trip abroad carrying the D7100 up Mount Vesuvius with my oh so light 24-70 f/2.8 I have decided to buy a nice compact.

Used to own a Canon G12, but that died a few years ago - was quite nice though.
Current favourites look like the X100S and RX100 MkII. Any opinions?
Prime vs zoom doesn't concern me much, I stick around the 35-50mm range all the time anyway.
Doesn't have to look fancy, I just want something with a non-interchangeable lens which takes beautiful shots.

Wow, I wish. That thing is crazy. Not sure why you'd buy that over the A7/A7r though...

Just seen the Panasonic GM1. Hadn't been considering M4/3 but it looks almost pocketable. Thoughts?

The most common reply you will probably get on here is the Sony RX100, and with good reason.

I have a Nikon D7000 and a load of very good lenses like the Nikon 17-55 2.8, but I wanted something lighter for travel and evenings out, so based on advice off here I got the RX100.

I have never looked back. It is simply incredible for the size and the images are excellent.

Because it fits in a pocket, I have found myself taking it many more places, and consequently taking a lot more photos which is great. I find the 3 memory settings it has very useful as you can flick between shooting settings quickly and unobtrusively, I have A set up for handheld around town/landscape shooting, B for people pictures (wide open aperture and centre point focuses etc), and C for long exposure night shooting where I can pop the camera on a wall or other object and easily snap a night scene with low ISO.

Most of my 'living room wall' photos are now stuff from my RX100, including these London skyline shots below which I had printed huge. They came out amazing and the detail in it is staggering.

I love it so much I want an RX1 or RX1R, but they are slightly less pocketable, and have no zoom which I do occasionally use.

I also have a D800 (and D3) and can highly recommend the RX100. Superb quality images.

Do you use an accessory viewfinder? It's the lack of viewfinder that spoils my Lumix.

I have canon S95, fuji x20 and RX100...what you wanna know?

Can only talk from the fuji POV, the X20 has a much smaller sensor than the X100, that said it still pretty impressive for a compact (I have the same-ish sensor in a XF1, my usual pocket camera). Ot does have a zoom lens, and the X100S is a fixed lens (though a good one). The X10/X20 are just a little too big to be truly pocketable, whereas the XF1 is pretty small (and on offer at Currys for a mere £129.

If you have the budget to by an X100S and want more flexibility, then I would consider an X100 and an XF1, or even an X-E1+Kit Zoom and XF1, or push the boat out and get the X100S and the XF1

In response to Mr Carter, I have the Fuji XF-1, X100, X-E1 and X-E2, so hopefully I can chip in on the Fuji front!!!

Well, imagine your S95 was replaced with a shiny new S120. You are going on holiday / trip out with friends / dinner / anything where a DSLR would be too heavy and impractical, which camera do you grab?

That's easy. RX100 every time. Fuji much to big. Canon, fab though it is doesn't give me the size of image I want.

I thought as much. Sounds like the best option to me. Out of interest, why do you keep the X20 if the RX100 is superior?

It's a much nicer camera. Does really good vid... and Mrs Get steals it as it looks sexy. It's much easier to use than the RX100, has more physical buttons (good thing) and much better menu system.... and it has a rangefinder built in. I'll not knock it, or sell it... just that the image size doesn't compare. If only it had the Sony sensor, the RX would struggle. It's ALL about the RX sensor. (And the RX is smaller to fit a pocket)

I have a Fujifilm X10 and a Sony RX100M2.

The X10 is a great camera to hold and use, produces nice images.

The RX100M2 fits easier in the pocket to carry every where and produces fantastic images.

The RX100 is the better option IMO.

The X100S looks fantastic, though.

I haven't used Fuji but S120 is much cheaper and better for video than RX100 FWIW but TBH if I wouldn't already own an S120 I'd probably buy RX100.
