Company took unauthorised payment
Discussion
Last year an insurance company took an unauthorised payment from my bank account when the policy was due for renewal (i had given them my debit card and bank details the previous year)since then the debit card has expired and i have been issued with a new one,so am i right in assuming that if they try to take another payment they will be unsuccesfull?
Read up about Continuous card payment authority. It was probably buried in the terms and conditions that they would auto renew the policy and could use your card details to continue collecting payments.

Don't assume anything - if you're not going to continue with insurance from that company then you should call them and advise them not to renew or take money from your account.
Its not quite that simple, the payment was for a friends motorcycle insurance (but he did pay me back anyhow)when they took the payment i called them to complain and they said that they could only take instructions from the policyholder about not taking any more payments in the future. But they have not got the details of my new credit card so i dont see how they can take further payments anyhow
I have a similar situation with the RAC, where I transferred the remainder of my year's membership to a friend (because I got covered on my car by a bank account).
The RAC have renewed membership for my friend but charged MY credit card for it (at the full renewal rate too). My real bugbear of this is that they did not send any paperwork to me about the renewal at all.
Can they do this? Do an auto renewal for someone else using my card, without sending me any paperwork to say they'd be renewing. With no paperwork I had no chance to cancel the auto-renewal or to know the amount that was going to be charged.
