Small compact first time camera?

So after a city break to Rome, one of my regrets is that I didn't have a proper camera to take and capture our trip.
All the photos I took where on my iPhone.
My partner and I like to do little city breaks but due to cost saving we always just take hand luggage only. This means space is a premium.
I would love to buy myself and learn to use a proper DSLR camera but would be unable to fit the camera+lenses and so on in my bags.
Can anyone recommend a small starter camera? I know I wouldn't be able to fit it in my pocket whilst walking around but I'd like something that doesn't become a hindrance in small spaces and crowds. I would also like to use it to learn and improve my own skills.
