I raised a grievance with my employers on the back of ACAS's advice.
The grievance was not properly managed and my employers decided it is best for me to leave the business. They offered a settlement which I accepted. I had to sign a settlement agreement. It is 5 days on and they have not signed the agreement. My solicitor said we should not chase. He has been reasonably useless throughout tbh.
How long do I have to wait for them to sign?

All the compromise agreements that I have written clearly state that once the employee has returned the signed agreement and has sought legal advice and evidence of this has been received, payment of the agreed figure will be made with 7, 14, 21 or 28 days.
My opinion is, if your agreement does not deal with how, when and where, then is has been poorly written and your solicitor should have picked up on this before he advised you to sign.
Usually these matters are dealt with promptly as the employee has agreed to go and the employer wants him out. What is there to slow things down?

I am a lawyer but have had little or nothing to do with these in my time other than send clients to the right person in the firm.
That said I would be stunned if there were not a timeframe within which payment should be made once the document is signed and back with them together with conformation of indy legal advice.

Has anyone noticed that this is yet another of those "I have a solicitor but rather than ask him or her I will ask some anonymous people on a car forum to give me legal advice" threads?
PS: ask the solicitor once again to chase. If he or she says no, ask him or her to explain why.

You are just making yourself more stressed. Either the company will pay, or it won't. If it doesn't, you can sue. Chill out for a bit. If you don't rate your solicitor, get one that you do rate.
Marty Byrne at Oxford Employment Law and David Ludlow at Barlow Robbins are two decent employment lawyers of relatively moderate price. For deluxe service, Dan Aherne or Catherine Taylor at Olswang, Meriel Schindler at Withers, but ker-ching. Great value for money from Richard Thorpe at Shakespeares.

You are right. I do need to chill out. Too much going on with my wife's pregnancy, the job situation and also the settlement.
I would have thought the gits would have just signed.
I have taken a note of the recommended lawyers. If I get no progress soon I will be contacting the recommended folks.

Your signature is probably lost in bureaucracy for a few days, or waiting for the right person to come back from leave. Expectant fatherhood is a bit nerve wracking, and it's easy to lose some perspective...
