Le Mans racer Hay tests CSR at Donington

Le Mans racer Richard Hay was among the first batch of UK drivers to sample Caterham's latest track challenger, the CSR 260. Hay and five others braved freezing rain at Donington Park last week to put the machine through its paces, and came away impressed.

"The weather was far from perfect for a meaningful test," said Hay, "but I learned enough to know that the CSR is going to be a lot of fun to race. It has masses more torque than an R400 and a power-to-weight ratio similar to that of a Tuscan."

Richard, whose track career began with Caterham Scholarship championship victory in 1997, has high hopes of contesting the Cosworth Caterham Masters at the wheel of a CSR next season: "It is very much where I want to be racing in 2005, and I am looking for another driver with whom to share a car."

Also in action at Donington yesterday were Caterham race veteran Ross Maxwell, who plans to swap his R400 for a CSR; Roadsport drivers Graham Fennymore and Terry Britchford; Eurocup and R400 regular Jamie Constable and experienced sports car racer Natasha Bell.

Further UK CSR tests are being planned. "There is a considerable demand for test drives from Caterham drivers old and new," said Nick Potter, principal of Caterham Midlands, "and we are doing our best to meet it."

The 260bhp Caterham CSR 260 will have its own endurance race series in 2005
- the Cosworth Caterham Masters - with two-driver events at some of the most charismatic circuits in Europe. The calendar has yet to be finalised but is expected to feature Spa-Francorchamps, Estoril, Monza, the Nürburgring, Dijon and Donington Park.

Twelve CSRs currently competing in the French Caterham championship will form the nucleus of the Caterham Cosworth Masters grid and a further eight orders for cars have already been received from mainland Europe.
