mini pump recommendations

So, after a flat last night that took 30 mins to change I've realised my £3 lidl mini pump is st. what's good, budget around £20 if poss?

Having been through a similar situation, I bought the Lezyne mini pump with flexi hose. Just as small and light as the pumps which just clip on, but I think there's less chance of knackering valves, and it is rated up to 120 psi (if I remember correctly). Pointless having a mini pump which only sticks in 40psi if you're on a day long ride on a road bike!

If that's out of budget (although I'd suggest they're worth the cost) then anything with a flexible hose between the pump and the valve will be easier to use and put less strain on the valve. If you get one which connects directly/rigidly to the valve stem, then you'll put extra strain on both the pump and valve by "rocking" action as you pump. This may lead to premature failure of either the pump or the valve.

Some of the Lezyne pumps have a two-way hose, which has attachments for both Presta and Schraeder valves.

The CO2 cannisters are OK, but I wouldn't rely on them on their own. They inflate tyres quickly, but there's a finite amount of stored pressure available to you, and sod's law says you'll get another puncture just after you use the last cannister. A reliable pump, on the other hand, has infinite pressure available - you just have to put some effort in, in order to compress it

I use the Topeak HybridRocket HP, does Presta and Schrader, rated to 160 psi and accepts canisters - never had an issue with it. Also, it fits in my jersey pocket!

When just about all you could buy were pumps with hoses we used to get people in the shop complaining about the hoses breaking and valves being damaged, they'd be pumping away, moving both hands, repeatedly pulling on the hose and valve.

As with most things, if done correctly, then no damage will occur. I prefer my pumps to not have a hose, as I can brace the valve end of the pump against the spokes/rim with my non pumping hand and pump with the other.
