A client of mine (IT!) has just decided to remove the seating from their warehouse booking in area - which has upset the guys who work in that area!

These guys have PC's on the booking in area, which is about 1.3m off the floor, and had a high stool seat to sit on. The Screen's are at a height such that when sat, they are comfortable to use.

Obviously the management here are trying to put pressure on the stores guys to do more, personally it's not a very nice thing to do, but the guys here have always had stools and been there for 4+ years.

Now, I quite like the guys in the stores (hell, they sign for all my ebay buyings!) and I wonder if there's anything that can help them. Obviously they're out in the warehouse putting stuff away, but there's a fair amount of PC work to be done there, and with the workstations setup the way they are, it's ok if you're just tapping a few numbers in, but for prolonged use I think it would probably be uncomfortable for them.

Does anyone have any advice?

Why are they tapping things in? Are they going to the warehouse, writing things down on a notepad or clipboard, and then going back to the PCs to enter the information?

The answer is to go with mobile devices. The ideal of course is barcode or RFID, scanning everything in and out and having all of the data entry completely automated, but that takes a lot of effort from a lot of people to get working. However, I think a tablet with a well-designed data entry app would cut the amount of shuttling back to the desk right down.

Yep, using a client on the PC to book in the purchase orders into stock, process picking notes for dispatch, using interlink's web app for sending out the parcels, and printing & affixing labels using the label printers.

Doubt manglement will want to pay for PDA's smile

At work , There is not a single seat in any of the warehouses! you simply have to stand up all day long.

I'd think that this would come under DSE Regulations, there should be a risk assessment for using the workstation at least.

suggest the warehouse staff go out for a curry then leave the IT boss a "little present" in his desk drawer.

There are no "rules" that require staff to be seated, it is about what is reasonable or not reasonable which of course is very subjective. I have worked for many years with warehouse based activities. If an employee is required to key data every now and then to do so whilst standing might be reasonable. If on the other hand that employee was required to work from the PC most of the time it would be reasonable to be seated. Where do you draw the line between? Surely staff/managers & customer concerned can discuss this and agree the best way forward.

Same here, in fact if you are caught sitting on a ledge or box, even when there is a known lull in activity you will be given very disapproving looks.

Don't know anyone who has actually been told off for it though so it must not be as bad as being seen with your hands in your pockets.

I currently pick requests in a warehouse, and can tell you that when i get a reason to sit on the only seat we have, its an absolute god send. 8 hours on your feet is hard.
