tracking riders in a group?

Trying to find a nice and easy solution, after all everyone has a phone with GPS etc these days.
I'm sure I can't have been the first person to have this thought, but an easy way of finding out where people are could be handy.
Came to mind after an informal MTB ride ended up with someone crashing out and being left for half an hour before we twigged he wasn't with the group.
We could have been better on head counts but in the dark, everyone's covered in mud and wearing similar kit.... The people at the front thought he was with those behind and visa versa till we arrived at a junction and tried to work out where he was.
In the event of an accident being able to say "he's there" would be pretty handy.

Used it for the last four hours of LEL1400km - had a bunch of mates virtually cheering me in. Works well, but canes the phone battery.
Other than that, I suspect you are in the realms of spot trackers, which is what gets used on big events.

In group rides at uni we used to have a "buddy" system- pair everyone up at the start of the ride, then whenever you stopped, got to a junction etc. get everyone to do a quick glance around to check your "buddy" was still around. That way it's not always down to one person to do a head count every 3 minutes.
Have to say though that some sort of app would be great, works both ways- on a group ride a while back in a new area I came off and hurt my shoulder, so had to bypass a steep off-road downhill, would have been good to know where the rest of the group was so I knew I was waiting in the right place to intercept them later on.
