Tethered shooting. You can do the same with Canon and the software they supply. It also has the option of actually controlling the camera from the PC, shutter speed and aperture etc., and you do get a live view on the computer.
that would be as used in "pole photography"There are several ways to approach the requirements of remote access. Some use an SDK (Software application) provided by the camera manufacturer to give direct control over the camera features (or some of them) and write directly to the applications file handling options. Others use the camera's ability (if it has it) to write to an external storage location from which the application picks up the file as though reading a 'hot folder'.
Back a few years ago Canon Powershot cameras allowed control over the inbuilt zoom lenses as well but Canon dropped that for some reason. In fact they dropped remote control of newer Powershot cameras completely.
I would wager the bit of software is called Nikon Camera Control Pro 2.
I use the free DigiCamControl and a USB cable and a laptop for shooting HDR bracketed, Focus stacked, timelapse, and Motion triggered shots. Great bit of kit, really, really powerful. You can for example set up a camera pointed at a bird table, set to autofocus and take a pic when a bird lands, or use it as an intervalometer to take star trails or multiple exposure astrophotos.
The Nikon Wireless Camera control for android software is total crap and deliberately crippled. You want DSLR dashboard which is vastly superior and adds the software features from the more expensive 7100 to the 5300 and 3300.
The wireless control is a bit flakey and a bit slow to transfer pictures and liveview is very jerky. Fortunately, you can just add a USB extender cable and USB link works perfectly from tablet, phone or laptop.

Never used it, because I have Nikon Camera Control Pro, but I think Lightroom offers tethered shooting much cheaper than the Nikon option. As above, the last time I tried 'tethered shooting' over wifi it was far too unreliable. I may experiment with an Eye-Fi card sometime soon, though...
