OK, is it in the least bit advisable to use a TVR as a day to day car?
budget would be about 30k initial purchase.

alternative would be to keep my scooby (02 5 door with lots of Prodrive go faster bits) and get something else for the weekend....

thoughts?

Plenty of people do use them as daily drivers, me included! The Chim seems fine, it can be a bit of a pig to manouvre at low speeds but the fact that its a TVR negates that PDQ.

20K miles a year though, you're sure to be getting a christmas card from Mr Shell if you do choose one!

Easy peasy, my V8S does around 25K a year rain or shine. I imagine it could be miserable if you got a bad example but I would expect a typical well maintained car to take this in its stride. I also reckon a car that is driven every day or every few days is more reliable than one that is laid up for weeks on end. On the positive side, you will look forward to every drive home, and won't take your troubles home with you. On the negative side budget around 50p per mile running costs.

Mine is 1996 Griff .. done jsut under 90k .. it has been used as an only car form the origional owner who did 75k in it over a few years.

read throught any prospective cars history .. and see if there is anything cropping up .. this will give a good indections to how the car is

Naaa - he'd be saving money over the Scoobie - my Chimaera 450 has better MPG than my Subaru. In fact, it's probably the most economical car I've ever had - I tend to get 20-25 MPG in it, although I do very little driving in traffic, so that would probably pull things down. On my last Subaru (company car, so kept detailed records) it tended to average 19MPG.

I echo the above 2 posts... Make sure you get a good example. A car that is described as "well sorted" because it's had lots of work done on it isn't always the best one to go for - perhaps a car that hasn't had a great deal of work necessary will be a beter buy?

I had a Griff 500, 1.5 years old which I ran for about 16k miles in 9 months. It turned out to be a pig, and cost me a f**king fortune, but if you get a good one and budget in for full servicing then I would think it'd be fine.

Up to a point, Lord Copper -- costs aren't just petrol though. Factor in the following:
a) Every service will throw up stuff that needs doing. Add at least 50% to your estimated service bill.
b) Services come round every 6,000 miles. That's pretty frequently.
c) You will want to buy it presents -- aluminium bits for the cockpit, new gubbins for suspension or engine bay. It adds up.
d) Add depreciation -- on a soft-top it depends when in the year you sell it and TVR high milers seem to suffer more than most.
e) GreenV8S is, as ever correct. All this will cost you roughly 50p/mile.

Ask yourself if you want to pay that much multiplied by an average of 12k miles/year. If not, buy a second car to do the motorway miles. Or just say sod it and drive the nuts off it, and to hell with the money...

12000 miles in the last year, with nothing but a split rad to bring me to a halt.

At 20000 miles (oops, write 200000 to start with ) a year, though, the depreciation will be spectacular I guess you'd need to be prepared to keep it forever, and throw lots of money at it. You'll be grinning like a maniac the whole time though, money bedamned.

Or put it another way - in the next 10 - 15 years you will not have the money or the space to be able to drive cars like these on the roads. Make the best of the situation before we are all taxed off the road.

When you think of it like that you would kick yourself if you dont and stuff the money.

My 4l Chim has done over 30 k in 18 months, not a single problem. Dunno how you can get over 20 mpg, but I do use it pretty hard....

servicing is fairly high, but only cos i get it sorted properly as soon as anything needs doing.

I thouroughly recomend one for commuting......

Thats a sad indictment of our society, but I'd tend to agree with you - get the car, have fun with it and sod the money - cars are not investments, be prepared to lose the lot, but, boy, will you enjoy it!

Just a point about money v's fun.

Fully costed depreciation and fuel etc on a brand new Chim 450 comes out at about 83p a mile on average, however the fun factor per mile, well thats worth a lot more than 83p of anyones money!

Do it, you know you want to, otherwise you wouldnt have got so far as to asking us!

On an older Chimaera with depreciation much lower, I calculated £1.32/mile @ 3k miles/year, assuming 25mpg and fuel costs of £0.75p/litre. It becomes 43p/mile if you drive 12,000 miles/year.

My depreciation assumption was £750/year which may be a bit high for a car five years or more old but is probably a reasonable average, while the mpg will be high if you do a lot of urban driving or blatting round country roads as opposed to motorway miles.

I have done 50k in my '99 Speed 6 Cerbera and the car has never driven as well as it does now, admittedly it is on its second engine (all done under warranty with a courtesy car thrown in) I average between 20-22 mpg which I think is excellent, and I never tire of driving it, but I do avoid any possible hold-ups and traffic jams although I am paranoid about overheating.
