BMW copies Lotus Esprit!!!!

Did anyone else think that the 1979 BMW M1 European Touring car and the Esprit look uncannily similar? I noticed it at the Goodwood Festival of Speed (p55 of the program, if you have one!). Comments/explanations please all...

Gioretto Giugiaro designed some of the worlds sexiest cars throughout the60's, 70's and 80's.These included the Louts Esprit, BMW M1, the Delorean DMC12, the Gordon Keeble GK1,the De Tomaso Mangusta, the Massarati Ghibli, the Massarati Bora, the Massarati Merak, He also designed some cack, like the Hyundai Pony, and the VW Passat and Scirocco, the Fiat Uno and Punto amonst others.

The BMW asked Giugiaro's company Italdesign to design the M1, which they did but BMW didn't build them. They were actually built by Italdesign themselves and there was a prodution run of only 465 cars.
