Help needed - wipers swtich on with the ignition !

Hi there fellas,
Wondering if anyone out there can tell me what to do... Everytime I fire up my 1994, 456GT, the wiper blades go off.
The wiper setting is definately switched to off - and I have to play about with the settings for a few minutes (from fast, to intermitant to off) - in order to get them to switch off. There doesn't seem to be any set routine which t go through in order to switch them off, sometimes it takes ages.
Can anyone suggest possible causes - and possible remidies?
