Sony Camera Not Reading Memory Card

Morning,
We have an 18 month old Sony (HX30V) digital camera. When we press the playback button, the screen shows no pictures/videos, but does show that photos have been taken by means of the counter. The screen works perfectly the rest of the time.
It cost £300 when new and the shop say that Sony have a standard £150 repair charge.
The shop tried another card as well. Anyone had similar??
