Hrm, I'm sure I saw a test of a load of 4x4s by Jeremy Clarkson where he attempted to drive each one up a sand dune. The Hummer was hopeless, it sunk after about 30 yards almost before it got onto the slope. Range rover piled it on to three quarters up the slope while I think ther winner was a Nissan Patrol that got to the top. Hummers remind me of the Lamborghini LM002 shed. At least that's got a hulking great V12 and a Lambo badge...

Talking of retail-tainment Land Rover will let you have a go of their range at a new course (with 4 zones) opened near Bluewater shopping centre... costs about £10 a go.

Ted - I can dig out the Ford press-release if you want me too. Didn't want to post it without permission.

Press release dug-out... sound slike a laugh (hey, it saves shopping with the misses - and at least you can have some fun whilst the credit card gets a bashing)

Launch of World's First Land Rover Adventure Zone

BLUEWATER, England, July 1, 2002 -- Land Rover has announced the launch of its first Adventure Zone at Bluewater Shopping Mall in Kent, Europe's largest retail and leisure destination. The attraction is a unique and extreme off-road riding experience.

Based on Land Rover's Experience Centres, Adventure Zone offers Bluewater visitors an opportunity to test the capabilities of the brand's 4x4 vehicles on a 7-acre off-road course. Situated on a cliff, the track covers four different themed zones. Each zone places obstacles of varying severity in the vehicles path, including an abandoned miner's shack, a jungle bridge, railway sleeper steps and a collapsing pier. The circuit also features a 43-degree downhill slope -- the steepest of any Land Rover courses.
Bluewater is already home to Land Rover Gear, where branded clothing, tailored off-roading adventure holidays and vehicle sales information are available. The outlet also sells Adventure Zone tickets, which cost £10 for about an hour's trekking. The experience starts at Land Rover Gear in the mall, from where visitors are ferried to the cliff-top to an awaiting fleet of expedition-ready Discovery vehicles.

"The sales growth that Land Rover has enjoyed in recent years proves there is a growing appetite for vehicles with all-terrain capabilities," said Land Rover UK Managing Director Mike Wright. "Through this fantastic new venture we hope that both owners and non-owners alike will learn that off-roading is more than just a great pastime; in many environments, it is a necessity.

"Off-road driving must be conducted responsibly, in correctly configured vehicles and with skill, as our vehicles and instructors at the Adventure Zone will demonstrate. This new attraction is also an unforgettable way to spend an hour or two during a family day out at Bluewater," he added.

General manager at Bluewater, Paul Lucchinelli, said the venture between Land Rover and Bluewater has created an exciting and unique experience for mall guests.

"The cliff-top Adventure Zone is a great way to experience Land Rover's most extreme off-road course and get some stunning views of Bluewater at the same time," said Lucchinelli.

A team of expert off-road drivers has been employed at the facility to share driving tips with visitors and demonstrate the vehicle's technical attributes and all-terrain capabilities.

Aware of special natural interests in some areas of the Bluewater site, Land Rover worked with local experts througout the development and construction of Adventure Zone to ensure that wildlife habitat remained undisturbed.

Rather that it wasnt really designed for use on sand but is very very very capable on just about every other surface.

The old one was damned uncomfortable to drive though, rather oddly no space at all.

Matt.

The total lack of space comes from the underbody armour plating, which meant that the radiator had to go in horizontally (like a scoobies intercooler) in the front, with the engine behind it and the gearbox between the front seats.
What can you say? It was designed as a military vehicle, with indestructability coming above comfort

Its mad, but I suppose thats the requirements, but you would have thought that comfort would be quite high up as these things have operating lives of thousands and thousands of hours.

When I went to the dealer to look at a proper Hummer I looked at the outside and thought, you could put a club night on in that and then the salesman opened the door and I saw what was akin to a single seater race car cockpit a huge 4ft wide table and then the same single seater on the other side. That one in its standard trim was $75K but they had one at the dealers for $190K that had been seriously trimmed, full leather, tv, fridge etc etc.

Surely that's what was being pointed out - it's all consumerist crap. As for being an 'infomercial' for GM, that's crap too.
