I'm picking my new bike up next week and am getting back into cycling after about 10 years, starting new to a road bike!

I wear glasses on a daily basis and wondered if anyone could advise me on glasses or goggles for when riding? The one thing that concerns me is when it's raining and also my glasses falling off and smashing.

I know I could wear contacts but that's not a possibility at present due to health reasons.

Thanks in advance from a pretty much newbie rider

How about some prescription safety specs? There should be a pair in here somewhere.

I have a pair of Bolle Tracker II, the prescription inserts fit inside a common frame, which are available in different shades. Come with a retaining strap as well. The inner frame is a bit bulky, but I've cut mine down, easy to do.

I just wear my normal glasses. No steaming up because the airflow clears them.

I probably go commando as often as I wear eye protection on a bike TBH

In daytime I use clear lenses or tints as appropriate (so clear lenses then lol) to stop rain, grit, crud in general let alone the headwind get into my eyes but after dark unless your optics are perfectly looked after I find that:
a) on coming lights generate significant glare which is pretty distracting
b) off road it can be hard to read as much detail from the trail as is ideal

When it rains and Im hammering along my glasses clear pretty effectively however in stop start commuting or techie MTB terrain I dont go fast enough and they mist - thats a decent pair of Oakleys too

In these circumstances I wear a peaked cap under my helmet, it keeps most of the rain out of my eyes and I get to see where Im going

Interestingly when I watch pro races I often notice a decent number of the peloton also going commando - strange as Id imagine they must get glasses free from sponsors

Cheers

I got some of this recently for exactly the reasons you describe:

http://www.evanscycles.com/products/muc-off/premiu...

It takes 5 to 10 minutes to apply and lasted three weeks worth of cummuting - mainly in the rain - before I needed to give the glasses a good clean anyway.

It's only a small bottle for £6-8 but you use so little at a time that it's probably 5 years worth in there.

I normally wear contacts for sports so not much help for you.

If I'm going for a quick morning spin (about 60-90mins) I just put on an old pair of normal glasses, plastic frames, low risk of injury to me and if they get broken its no loss... if I fall of and spank my face breaking old glasses is a minor concern :-)

Don't worry, just ride.
I have one pair of glasses, the prescription is too high to go for contacts, with such a high prescription, i have to go for the thinnest most expensive lenses you can get!
My last pair cost more than my bike but I rode in them every day without incident and I fell off about once a month on average (mountain biking).
As long as the frame fits properly, you will be fine. My latest pair are Oakleys, but a standard squarish metal frame with straight grippy sides. They work well off road smile

I use my normal prescription sunglasses and glasses. This year I'm going to have reactolite lenses in the sunglasses though as it's a pain carrying both types around for forests, overcast days, very early or late rides etc etc.

I also picked up some cheap non prescription cycling glasses which I'm having reglazed also in reactolite by ciliaryblue.com. They have quite curved lenses but CB can do these. Whatever you do, never bother with anything needing an insert. Direct glazed all the time.

I just use my normal prescription glasses for riding if it's dull outside, they're Oakleys though so the 'ear socks' on the side hold them more securely that regular arms which droop and don't have grippy bits (technical term there). When it's sunny I use Oakley prescription sunglasses, I've always used them as I love the Gold Iridium lenses which are still passable when the sun goes in - had them for years and do everything in them.

I have just bought a pair from this site with my prescription fitted

http://www.sportspecsonline.co.uk/categories/Sport...

Service was excellent, and they are actually run by Opticians with real shops rather than just an internet site.
