Loving the Euro road trip write ups and intend to take the love of my life (and the missus!) away for a few days in the summer. Did Snowdonia recently and think the roads there are great but going around Llanberis reminded me how little I like heights...but I do love the scenery!

So, short of going to Holland anyone know of some cracking roads on the continent which will meet two briefs:

  • Should have a nice amount of things to do in between driving fun
  • Stunning though places like the Stelvio pass are would rather avoid anything that involves massive dropoffs
Car is a 911 Cab so roof down sweeping roads are the way to go me thinks...

Any suggestions for a wussy driver? Roads that run along valleys are a particular fave!

I'd head for smaller mountains/hills, so perhaps the Vosges region of France via Reims and Champagne or perhaps Colmar and other medieval towns. The Black Forest area of Germany is good too.

In general, look on Michelin maps (or viamichelin.com) for roads with green markings down the sides - these denote scenic routes.

Top tips - thanks Ewenm. Not done the driving abroad thing yet but loving the thought.

Yes, and the roads around Fussen, west and south of Munich and even into Austria and Slovenia) were exactly as you wanted in the OP (maybe a bit far from Blighty though!)

Saw numerous BMW/Bini test mules doing the rounds there also on my trip (EP3 'chav' roadtrip in the roads trips wiki)

Plenty in the area too:

Museums - Porsche & MB towards Stuttgart, BMW in Munich
Castles - Neuschwanstein castle and the lakes are epic
Beer - its Germany/Bavaria, need I say more?
Lakes & B&B's - plentiful and cheap
Food - Pretzels, sausages, kraut and some proper kebabs!

Could always head the way I did if you wanted some proper sun?

You could head for the south of France. Places like the Verdon Gorge, Gorge du Tarn, etc are stunning. Theres plenty of other good roads and the weather tends to be good.

Another shout for the south of France.

If you're in to castles you can visit Carcassonne and do the Cathar trail.

Here's some pics from when I drove trough Gorge du Tarn

Good suggestions /also worth considering that you can do the Alps but avoid the high pass roads/take the tunnels and main roads instead and maybe a few selected non-dramatic passes like for example, the very scenic Simplon pass - could combine with the Italian Lakes for a neat destination.
