I have read a lot of the road trips on here with interest recently as I'm going through the black forest/switzerland/northern italy at the end of may.
I'm using Tyre (and googlemaps) to plan a route, and both these systems can't deal with grimsel to furka! Computer says no, at home and work.
I'm sure it can be done, as viamichelin works ok, but can any of you who have done it confim that one leads to another ok?
Which way round would you recommend, and would you take in St Gotthard or Neufenen at the same time? yikes
Thanks in advance.

Going south on the Grimselpass you can go onto the Furkapass.

Check the time of year you are going as the passes in the area are not open all year round. You can even get closures in the summer months.

Whilst in the area allow extra time to do all the passes. Susten, Grimsel, Furka, Gotthard, Nuffenen. My personal favourites are Susten and Nuffenen.

Have fun.

Furka best west-to-east
Grimsel is quite boring really - just tight s/backs no flow. best just viewed from Gletsch as you drive Furka
i would go south to Andermatt - Gothard - Nuffenen - Furka - Susten
then either direct to Interlaken or down Grimsel and onwards from Brig

Both googlemaps and tyre will be taking into account the date and possible winter road closures and routing around the high passes. I've had the same issue several times. Try again later in the year and the problem disappears (discussed yesterday on the Stelvio thread). If anyone knows a way around that, please let us know.

I've had to turn around on the Grimsel in late June due to a blizzrd.

Tried to do Furka last June 14th and it was closed til the following day - problem is not so much fresh snow but melting/slippages across the road..... I think we were unlucky but should normally be OK by then....

Yeah, subject to weather it's possible, although another vote for the Susten as it's a bit more flowing.
