Hi mate, the long and the short of it is I'm not gonna be getting my own car in the foreseeable (sp?) future. I was going to post a topic thanking everyone for their advice and suggestions when I got some wheels sorted but now seems as good a time as any.

So I'll say it now: THANKS

The best quote I could get was just under 1600 quid for a Mini 1000. Silly money that I can't afford what with tuition fees, accomodation etc next year. It's a shame cos I fancied a car to do up in my spare time. I also got quite excited about the prospect of having a Landie (cheers Pete for that idea ) Unfortunately insurance was again prohibitive. I will own one one day though .

Fortunatey my mum decided that she'll ditch her company car in March when the lease runs out because the tax is a b@stard. This means she'll need a car anyway so she's gone for one of these:

It's to be delivered tonight or tomorrow. I'm allowed to use it if I paint my Gran's flat which is fair enough I thought. So, in a short while I'll be mobile again. It's only a 1 litre but its quicker than the Fezzer, its got PAS, ABS with EBD don't you know and a digital speedo.

Sorry to hear the outcome Matt , but at least you'll be semi-mobile again at some point . Shame the Landie idea didn't come off, they're great fun.

-fcuking insurance companies take the piss

I was quite surprised, when I first experienced the process of insuring a car in the UK

In Germany, you'll compare the quotes and decide for a company - thats all.

Just got an online-quote for a 1978 Landrover 88 - €794/year 3rd only
no rebates, no discounts, no classic car
Youngest driver: 23
multiple drivers (every driving license holder is allowed to drive the Landy)

I am sure there'll be cheaper quotes from other companies.

Unfortunately they only insure domestic residents

Insurance is a b@stard really, made worse by 6 bonus points , an at fault crash , Claims Direct , being young, no NCB, gypos that don't pay insurance , taxes, rip off garages and I'm sure there's more. Still, in five years time it won't be as bad and then I can get a decent motor

Cheers mate, thanks for that I expect to be in quite a lot of debt when (touching wooden desk) I finish uni. And obviously fast cars cost lots of money. But that's what finance is for, isn't it? Hey, if needs be I'll live on a barge and become a water gypo (I'll rent a garage!) but I'm having a sportscar I tell you!

Matt have you thought about building a kitcar. I was similar to you in that I was a student had b*gger all money and wanted a sports car. Started building in my last year (had a sandwich course so year 3 I was paid and I saved a lot) and got on the road the year after that with something a bit different.

Really wanted to do that this year. I got Ron Champion's book and booked myself on a welding course. Unfortunately I have no garage so workshop space was a problem. I couldn't find any spare garage space either (Should have tried harder) Then the welding course was cancelled because only 2 people enrolled. Doh!! Like you I've saved like mad this year (3 jobs at one point!). I don't think I'll have a year out though because this year has been really sh1t for me. I'll do university and get a job where I'm not treated like poo I think I do want to build a car from scratch (Not like Chassis ) at some stage but it can wait a bit.

Matt - good luck with the Yaris mate, I've had mine about a year (9,000 miles) and it's been a gem - couldn't have asked for a better little runaround. It's quick too (for a little 1 litre) and suprises more than a few pax mower boys in Novas etc.

Have fun!!

Only to keep the revs sensible for the first few hundred miles or so and try not to over rev while the engine is warming up in the morning. I took mine back to the garage after about 2,000 miles for a check over - this isn't needed but the dealers offered so I took them up on it. The only problem I had was that the window seal on the drivers door worked loose but that was sorted in a couple of minutes.

The only other thing I have been told to look out for is the CD player starts to get a bit iffy after a couple of years (happened on a friends car) so keep you eyes (or ears as the case may be) peeled.

Matt, see the Yaris at least as a motivation to replace it with a sportscar - with a Landrover you wouldn't be motivated to replace, but to add a sportscar

Cheers, I'll definately be sensible with this car (honest gov). It's worth quite a bit of cash and its not mine so I'll be good. No, really. )

I can see myself with a Landie and a TVR. TVR most of the time and the Landie for towing, carrying stuff, off-roading and of course when the TVR breaks down

So do I! Not necessarily a Tiv, more likely to be an Elise Mk1 or Pork 928 where the Lotus is cheaper to run, and the Porker having more power for money.

I know a bloke in Germany, who has two identical Jag XJ12 SIII - all the time one of them is in the workshop.
That's what I call redundancy for mobility

Excellent Does he has two insurance policies or does he just swap the number plates over and hope no one will ever bother to look at the VIN number?
