The things motorists say............
Discussion
We are all used to the 'pay some road tax'comment (I do, I have 2 cars), or get a license (again, I do), etc etc - but I had a new one that made me giggle a bit tonight!
I pulled up at a set of traffic lights to turn right, an attractive young lady in a BMW pulled alongside me on my left-hand side, lowered her window and said 'You are on fire' - being middle aged and ugly I didn't think it was a chat-up line so frowned - she pointed out the steam rising from every inch of my being in the lights of the car behind me - quite funny I thought!!!!
"You need to slow down, you were going too fast."
This, from a driver who overtook me and turned left, a whisker away from my front wheel.. I laughed at him.
In hindsight I should have asked him what the speed limit was.. I sure as hell wasn't doing more than 30mph, but about half that. I wish!

last year on the south coast challange i had 3 guys in a corsa roll down their windows and played eye of the tiger. they followed me until the song finished
that was different.
Non cycling story:
that was different. I was down the local rugby pitch doing a sprint and body weight circuit wearing a white running vest. A group of about 5 5-10 year olds kept following me shouting "come on 118" and asking "what are you doing 118". It was funny for a while but I had to ask them to go away as I thought someone would have issue with a sweaty bald guy hanging around with kids. "Why don't you want us around 118?"
Bizzare exchange with an elderly motorist tonight!
Pulled up to some lights in Henley in a one way street, I was turning right so was on the right hand side of the road in the 'bike stopping area' just before the lights.
While waiting at the lights I could hear the car behind me revving up, dropping the revv's then doing it again over and over.....I looked over my shoulder and a very elderly gent (looked 80+) in a new Honda Jazz was sat behind the wheel looking at me.
After a few seconds he crept forward into the 'bike zone' and wound down his window and said (in impeccable Queens English) 'you lot'*' make me f
king sick' - in that kind of 'did I hear right' way I asked 'Sorry, what did you say?' - 'You heard me perfectly well, and your flashing light distracts me'. I suggested that maybe he should hand his license back if he cannot concentrate when he sees flashing lights as they are used at school crossings, roadworks etc at which point he suggested I procreate with my mother, then pulled away through a red light! - Bizarre!
'*' Assume he meant middle aged white bloke, tax paying father of two.

Lee, I think you are making that up.
You clearly state that you were "waiting at the lights" and that the old duffer "pulled away through a red light". You are obviously mistaken, as it is common knowledge that ONLY cyclists EVER jump red lights. In fact, it is a universally known truth that ALL cyclists ALWAYS ignore red lights, whereas ALL drivers ALWAYS obey EVERY traffic regulation in the book.
I'm sure you must have dreamt the whole incident. Hope that helps

This was a couple of years back, Addenbrookes side of Hills Road Bridge in Cambridge, whilst they were dicking about with various road layouts. Was sat in the ASL box at a red light. New and shiny Merc behind me pulls away and goes straight into me, all whilst light is red. This shunts me forward, the brunt taken by my carradice pannier. Short arsed bald man shouts "you f
king people make me sick", and goes to drive off. I got my phone out to get his number plate. Guy drives 100yds up the road and pulls over.
I'm fully expecting a ruck. Instead, chap gets out with hands up and says "what will it take to make this go away?" I suggest that the pannier might be damaged. He gives me £50 and I give him my word that I won't report it.
All very bizarre. Colleagues were of the view that the driver probably shouldn't have been driving the car.
