It's about the time of year I normally replace my bike. I've never spent more than a couple of hundred quid on my bikes. However, I think it's high time I bought a proper machine. I prefer Hybrids to Rodies, as most of my routes tend to be on stty, broken up, country roads, and knacked up cycle paths. Howver, i'm not discounting the right roadie. As I said I'm thinking of going for a proper machine, my budget will be up to 10 grand. There's a mind blowing array of bikes out there, I just thought I'd enlist your help to narrow the field somewhat. Over to you chaps thumbup.

To be honest, you'll be looking at rubbish around that price. You really need to up the budget to about £20,000.
And factor in some spare to get some decent tyres.

Also, they have to start a new thread on what tyres to get.

I'll be first - don't bother.

You will not notice the difference between a £4k bike and a £10k bike.

Buy a £4k bike and spend the rest on a holiday to ride it somewhere. Or for that budget get two top end bikes.

Just checked the OP is British incase the price was in Lira, Drakma or some other worthless currency and would turn out to be 1k

Sorry its only €4000 though. You can buy top end mountain bike and a road bike with the change just in case the above doesn't quite cover all the bases.

This would make an ideal commuter, and probably doable in OP's budget

Typical responses….

For all we know, OP may already have a villa in Menorca / any other cycling Mecca. It's not holiday advice or usual "barge" buying advice.

Anyway based on the criteria and if budget is no object and you are seriously considering rough road riding CX would be a good start. Moots would be a less ubiquitous option for titanium bikes and you can spec what you want. Possibly also Parlee. They do a cx bike (again if you are going full custom). For you're budget you're be looking at DA9070 / Super Record EPS, decent wheels (worth getting 2 sets; decent handbuilts doable within budget) etc (just abouts).

If not a CX bike; there is the Domane Classics edition; which is the same bike that Cancellara runs and given its cobbles / comfort orientation possible worth considering. You'll be ponying up the best part of 7k; and there be plenty of internet "know it alls" along in a mo to tell you that buying a 7k Trek is madness; but you'll have a pretty awesome machine (and it will be rare as rocking horse sh*t).

At this level you should be getting properly fit anyway; so its more like buying a bespoke suit. I did it, and yes its pretty obvious that bikes / tech suffers from the law of diminishing returns. And most of us are over-biked. My dry weather bike is a Project One Madone 7 and its not x3 the bike of my Boardmann AiR9.2S "wet" bike (and I'll even add that on 25mm tyres / Racing 1's the Boardmann rides smoother). Of course the Madone is poor VfM in bike terms; but at this price point I doubt other bikes ate the correct comparable (unless you look at super exotic non-UCI legal like Storck stuff).

Oh do change the record, I've explained that one.

This was a serious question.

Thank you. That's the sort of info I was after. I'm pretty fit, I ride in all sorts of weather, and all times of day / night / traffic conditions. I'm not saying I want to spend the whole 10 grand on one bike, just that it gives me the widest choice. Who would you recommend as a supplier for the types of bikes you've mentioned?

I'd reserve £2k of that budget for a wattbike and a coach so you dont suffer the embarrassment of having to push your £8k wonder bike up a hill...

Nope that's a 'cheaty' nono. I really have a massive dislike of battery assisted bikes.

That was another thought I had. like I said the 10K budget was just to get as many 'proper' proper bikes on a list as possible without going to bespoke / pro type stuff.
