Evans bike maintenance sessions

Has anyone been to one of these FixIt classes? I am a complete numptie with my bike, much to my LBS's gain and want to learn some basics.

Hey - not done Evans but did one at my local bike shop. Can't talk it up enough! It used to take me ages to change an inner tube etc on the road. Now can do it in 2 mins!!! Plus basic cleaning and dos and donts. Do it you will learn tons and give your bike a longer life.

Go for it. Stuff like this is always easier if you have someone showing you. Everyone should be encouraged to learn a bit about their bikes, nothing is very complicated on a bike but it's just having the confidence to get stuck in and have a go. I have friends that cycle to work, tiny little thing has gone wrong and they've ended up with a very very long walk home (although it doesn't help that they don't even carry a tube and a pump!) A morning spent elarning the basics could save you lots of time and money down the line

Knowing a little more about cycle maintenance has vastly increased my enjoyment of cycling as a hobby.
So:
Changing inner tubes.
Adjusting the derailleur.
New chain.
New cassette.
New cables.
New brake pads.
Even bleeding hydraulic brakes (shimano not avid).

Should probably be within the capabilities of every cyclist armed with a couple of allen keys and one or two specialist tools which cost <£10.
Saves you loads if you use the bike more than periodically.
Also means you don't get ripped off by the LBS buying the most expensive Ultegra cassette for your pub bike!

The more complicated stuff I found was sometimes better off with a bike shop given my spanner ineptitude:
New headset/swapping forks.
Replacing the bottom bracket.
Suspension service.
Building a wheel.
Hub maintenance.

Looks interesting, I'm fairly proficient with brakes, wheel hubs and cranks but might book a course to understand about adjusting gears.
