Thinking about a trip to Stuggart Porsche/Mercedes

Thinking about having a trip to Stuggart to visit the Porsche museum and Mercedes museum also. Thinking about flights from Manchester and maybe using the underground/taxis to get around Stuggart. Any ideas about where to stay near the centre of Stuggart??? or is better to get a flight and do it by car hire??
Any help would be grateful!!!
PS I have done the same trip with the Porsche club and found it a bit expensive!!

Yup, I agree. I did Stuttgart to Worcestershire (via the Ring) in my trusty old 993, set off German time at 9.30AM, arrival pub 9.30PM UK time. Indicated on the autobahn, just shy of 160 MPH with more to go, helped with timing though ROAD TRIP!
I took a three day trip via Reims, (Verdun to see the WW1 war graves), Metz and Stuttgart and had a great time. I had never heard of Metz before, and found it a nice city.
In Stuttgart I stayed here http://www.abalon.de/en/ , great hotel with bars etc a couple of minutes walk down into town. Not good with a 911 though, as I found out. The cars park on ramps, so I'd stay there with a hire car but not anything else unless they have better parking I didn't know about, maybe worth asking.

driven and flew - both great experiences
if you do decide to fly make sure you rent a gt86 from hertz - great car and cheap(same price to rent a golf) also make sure to spend a day at the 'ring - you wont regret this. if budget is a concern rent a swift stage 2 from rent4ring - its surprisingly enough car for your first trip there, otherwise go for the m3

recommend driving down, you can pop into Spa, do a lap of the ring, drive over the Eiffel mountain to the 'bahn, and then boot it down to Stuttgart.
Stuttgart is a great place to stay (book a decent hotel via Lastminute.com), also you can take in the old Solitude road racing circuits to the south of the city - very cool on a Saturday evening :-)
The Porsche museum is a pristine architectural gem - filled to the rafters with Ferdinand's finest. After three hours of listening to the audio track you'll be fully brain-washed ;-)
The Mercedes museum is equally stunning, if not a little more grand. An incredible experience - literally a trip back in time, then through to the present day.
Both are petrol-head nirvana - industrial cathedrals celebrating automotive design, engineering and sporting prowess

Planning a similar trip to Stuttgart and the Black Forest
We stayed in the Hilton Garden Inn, right next to Stuttgart FC's stadium. That was on Mercedesstrasse, 5 minutes walk from the Mercedes Museum. The museum is fantastic, much bigger than Porsche's. It's more of a history of the motorcar whereas the Porsche one is just the history of Porsche. The Hilton Garden Inn was a great, classy and clean hotel but fairly far outside the city centre. Staff were excellent there.
We had to walk about 15 minutes to the nearest tube station to get into the city centre. We used to get off at Koenigstrasse and made our way from there. I would say finding a hotel around there would be better for you if if you decide to fly.
If you are looking to do the Porsche Factory Tour make sure to mail them on werksfuehrungen@porsche.de to arrange it. Make sure to tell them you want an English speaking guide. The tour guide meets people at the museum and brings them across to the factory. So, would be a nice thing to add them both together. Then go across to the dealership to finish it off. (PS wear comfortable shoes!)

And if you like speed of a different kind, on the autobahn about an hour north of Stuttgart is the Sinsheim auto and technik museum - they have a Concorde and the Russian "Concorde" (Tupolev TU 144) next to each other - an impressive sight. Cars as well as planes.

. This ^ sounds very interesting. I sense another German trip coming up.Well thats after I've found the 2.5K for new suspension, 1.8K for RS clutch and flywheel (My DMF is pretty kaput), 1K for service and new wheel bearing.

We stayed at the hotel that was inside the main rail station, clean, tidy and a perfect location. We really enjoyed Stuttgart both the museums are a good day out. Very easy to get around by public transport
